Pennsylvania is not a compact state which means that you cannot transfer your nursing license from that state to any others. Maryland is one of the many compact stats which means that you can practice with that license at any of the other compact stares. Google nursing compact states to find a comete list. If you have a licencse and which to work in another and compact does not apply you will have to apply and pay for a license it that state. You will need to look up that states board of nursing site for the requirements. You often need to be fingerprinted and wait for 30 days so allow for time but it is very attainable.

Cecily’s Answer

Hi,

I think it's great that you are thinking ahead and realizing how portable a career in nursing truly is. Many nurses live in one state and may work in another, so for the most part it is pretty easy to get a license in another state. Also, if you are a spouse of military personal, most states have an accelerated pathway to transferring a nursing license in their new state, so if this applies to you, make sure you take advantage of this policy. Good Luck!!!!

Cecily recommends the following next steps:

Look up the board of nursing for the state that you wish to practice in. Review the requirements.
Pay close attention to the requirements of the other state/s. The requirements may be different, for instance, one state may require you to attend a special training, or have more continuing education credits. Most of these requirements, however, usually do not become mandatory until you have been out of school for a few years. Additionally, they are not meant to be a barrier, so don't let this interfere with your desire to be mobile in your nursing career.
