Which professions are best in the field of finance?

I'm newly returning to school after taking a few years off and completely changing my degree to finance. I'm good with numbers, but still not entirely sure which route to go after college. #finance

Hi Joe,

A great profession in the field of finance could be accounting. I was also unsure what to go for in that are when I was in college, and decided to go for accounting, and I will share you my experience.

There is a big need for accountants currently, and there are many areas an accountant can fill. For example in the big four accounting firms, there are many areas for finance, and one of the main requirements is to be an accountant.

I do believe accounting will open you the doors to may job opportunities as the accountant can do and specialize in many areas of finance and also in tax specifics.

Hope this is useful!

Hi Joey. Finance is a wide field with a variety of interesting career options. I would divide the major paths between: 1. working within or for an organization; or 2. working across markets

When working within a company, there are a variety of roles that are finance-related. All major organizations (businesses, government, and nonprofits) need people to track how cash flows and determine where to direct resources. For example, a finance-trained person typically analyzes whether to put money behind a new product or project. There here also roles helping am organization fund itself. This involves making sure there is enough incoming cash to pay for all planned costs. Some of this work is conducted by outside consultants or bankers, but either way the focus is on an individual organization. You have an opportunity to become deeply knowledgeableadbolt the operations of a single organization.

There are also plenty of jobs that broadly touch the capital markets. These roles are involved in analyzing and trading stocks, bonds and other things. There is a wide variety of roles from advising clients on where to invest, as a financial advisor or financial planner, to being involved in the daily trading of stocks and bonds at an investment bank or hedge fund. Jobs here involve being more broadly knowledgeable about many organizations, but with less depth.

Justin recommends the following next steps:

Create an outline of all the types of finance jobs you can find
Try to determine the responsibilities of each job. Don't hesitate to ask about a job on CareerVillage.org.
Being to think about which roles would best suit your interests.

Best is a relative term. If you like Plain Finance, you can become an Investment Banker. This job probably pays the highest amount of money in Finance, but again it is the most competitive field, and might need you to work 12-16 hrs a day. Other lucrative fields in Plain Finance are Hedge Fund Analyst, or analyst at the Private Equity or Venture Capitalist firm. Strategy Consulting is another field where the work is interesting and challenging as well.

If you like Quantitative Finance and if you are good at Math, Statistics, and Coding, you can be a High Frequency Algorithmic trader at a trading firm. Also you can find a lot of Finance jobs in professional services firms (such as PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, Ernst & Young) where you can provide Audit, Advisory, or Tax services to Clients.
