Doc’s Answer

To start a CNA training program, you need to be at least 16 years old with a high school diploma, or the equivalent. Next, you will need to find accredited CNA classes, these programs usually include a minimum of 60 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of supervised training. Some training programs are offered during employment, if they meet your state code. The majority of these programs can be found at local community colleges, trade schools, or even the American Red Cross. You can also find local CNA classes near you as well as CNA classes online. The program can be completed in 6-15 weeks, once the training is complete, you are eligible to apply for CNA certification, which allows you to sign up to take the official CNA examination. It’s recommended you take a free CNA practice exam to prepare.

FREE ONLINE CNA COURSES
• JOB CORPS: You can pursue this free CNA training program at 62 Job Corps centers around the U.S. Through this program, you can earn your CNA license. You need a high school diploma or equivalent to qualify for the program. You also must complete introductory and career prep courses, earn a passing score on all tests, and meet math and reading requirements. Additional state requirements may include a criminal background check or state content requirements.
• AMERICAN RED CROSS: Also offers FREE CNA training to qualifying individuals through practical and theoretical based training, allowing you to gain the skills required to become a fully CNA. The main skills taught by the American Red Cross include taking basic patient observations, undertaking basic first aid, communication skills, problem solving skills and other such techniques which you’re likely to require when working as a CNA.
• LEHMAN COLLEGE: Scholarship covers 50% of tuition. Lehman College’s hybrid CNA program is approved by the New York State Education Department and prepares learners to take the state exam for CNA certification. The program includes a two-course series on anatomy, physiology and fundamentals of patient care courses. In total, students complete 95 classroom hours and 30 clinical rotation hours. Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

Mary Jane’s Answer

This is highly dependent on your state. If you are a high school student, speak to a guidance counselor to see if there are any vocational courses offered by your school that offer free or low-cost training. Otherwise, contact long-term care facilities in your area to ask if they provide any tuition assistance for CNA training. Some facilities offer free on-site training if you promise to work for them for a certain period of time (e.g., 6 months, 12 months). Finally, you could call the community colleges or other training centers that offer CNA training and ask if there is any financial aid or other programs you are eligible for to lower or eliminate the cost of training. I know, for example, that Goodwill offers healthcare certificate trainings in some states. There may be special programs available in your community through the state government or local agencies and the long term care facilities would know about those programs.
