What are the best tools for staying debt free when going to college?
I've heard stories of people getting "full rides" to college and I want to know how? Does that mean they will get their education at no financial cost? And if so, how can all of us students do that? I want to get my degree as a Dietician and am looking for colleges that aren't ridiculously expensive, but I am still afraid of being in debt. #debt #college #loans #financial-planning #college-advice

One of the best ways is by working for a corporation offering tuition reimbursement - that's how I did it! My employer reimbursed me for all of my college costs - its a great way to finish your degree without incurring lots of student debt.

Hi Maria. It is great that you are already thinking about college costs. College is expensive and nobody wants to have a huge debt right after graduation. There are a variety of ways to reduce the cost of college. Full rides are tough to get, but definitely the goal. Full rides can be based on academic merit, athletics, or financial need. Since you already know you want to become a Dietician, you have an advantage; you can research schools with the program of your desire. Some programs will be less expensive than others. Another option to possible consider, when going to college, will you be living on your own, or with family? Housing costs can pile up during the course of college.
If you have a great GPA, serve as a leader in high school/community, you may receive a scholarship (full ride or partial) from the school based on your application. If you are a stellar athlete, you may be able to turn your athletic talent into scholarships or a full ride. It is important to research the athletics program of the schools you are interested in, to ensure they have a program for your sport, as well as career interests. I also highly recommend filling out a FAFSA application (fafsa.ed.gov), which can help you get financial aid for college (it is based off you/ your family’s financial situation).
Colleges have many jobs on campus that they would prefer to hire their students for. I worked at the library for a majority of my time in the college, and it was a great job to earn spending money. I also interned during the summer, which also helped pay for expenses.
I highly recommend applying for scholarship through your high school, online, and eventually from the college you go to. You would be surprised at how many scholarships are out there, and how few people apply. It is definitely worth your time to write an essay to earn potentially thousands of dollars. Hope this helps. Apply for scholarships. Small scholarships are common but don't come close to covering all of tuition and living expenses. Full tuition or full-ride scholarships are rare, but if you have the grades don't hesitate to apply!
