Hi Cynthia,
What a great question! We very often mention 'professionals' but rarely stop to consider what that means!

In general, we think of it in terms of being a noun. A 'professional' status is often given to someone who has some type of a credential in the field. For example, a medical professional would be a doctor who went to medical school and obtained a license to practice medicine. A project manager obtained a PMP certification. A realtor took the exam to obtain a license to sell property. Not all fields have licensing or certifications, though. For example, a professional entertainer is generally someone who performs so well that people are willing to pay them for what they do, and they make enough money to sustain that talent.

There can be other meanings to the word. As a verb, being professional means showing up on time, being prepared, understanding the assignment, responding accurately and promptly, following through on commitments, that sort of thing.

Hope that helps!

Best,
Mark

Jim’s Answer

Hi Cynthia,

Being a professional generally means demonstrating a high level of skill, expertise, and ethical conduct in a specific field or occupation. It involves consistently performing to established standards and maintaining a commitment to personal and professional development. Key aspects of professionalism include:
1. Competence: Having the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the job effectively.
2. Reliability: Being dependable, meeting deadlines, and fulfilling commitments.
3. Ethics: Adhering to ethical standards, showing integrity, honesty, and respect for others.
4. Appearance and Behavior: Presenting oneself in a way that reflects respect for the job, colleagues, and clients. This includes appropriate
attire, communication, and demeanor.
5. Accountability: Taking responsibility for one’s actions, including successes and mistakes.
6. Continuous Improvement: Striving to learn and grow within one’s profession to stay current with trends and best practices.
Being professional isn’t just about skill but also about how you conduct yourself in the workplace and in your relationships with others.
Hope this is helpful.
Jim
