How do I get published internationally as a minor?

I'm 14 and working on a few stories and want to get them published one day (under a pseudonym). I live in the Philippines and doubt that it would get much attention here, but I think it could sell more in countries like the US or mainly-English-speaking countries in general. Should I self-publish? Look for an agent? Go to publishers? How do I market my stories?

I don't disagree with the other advice on this thread, but here's one thing I tell everyone: just write.
Find public forums where you can share examples of your work, self publish, and grind your way forward. Apply to agents with query letters, but be wary of anyone asking you to pay anything to publish. It's not going to be an easy road, and you'll likely need your parents' help to get anywhere at this stage in your life, but if you really want to write then go on and do it. If you've got stories in your head that need to be developed then let them out and keep in mind that you'll need to edit, revise, and revisit your ideas again and again until they're presentable to the public.

But first and foremost, just write. Let the other stuff happen as it will.

Tami’s Answer

That all depends upon the audience you're trying to reach and the topics you want to write about as well. It sounds like you have some agenda in mind, so use this in your approach when networking by searching the internet for publishing platforms, including self publication outlets.

Tami recommends the following next steps:

Contact sources in your genre and niche.
Stay on topic and focus on the intended audience to better resonate with your peers.
Look outside your peer group by including instructors and other mentors that can provide guidance.
Consider doing charity work by publishing as a means for achieving the greater good.
Remember to take account for your own experiences and don't avoid writing for your peer group, since it may be a great source of inspiration.

Getting published internationally as a minor is entirely possible with the right approach. Here’s a structured plan to help you achieve this:

1. Identify the Type of Writing and Area of Focus
Decide what type of content you’re most interested in: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, journalism, or research. Having a clear direction helps you find suitable publications.
2. Research Minor-Friendly Publications
Some publications specifically encourage submissions from young authors and even have sections dedicated to youth contributions. Examples include:
Creative Writing: Teen Ink, Stone Soup, The Adroit Journal
Academic and Research Papers: Journal of Emerging Investigators, Young Scientists Journal
General Interest for Youth: The Telling Room, Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
International Journals: If your focus is on academic or research writing, search for open-access journals that have no age restrictions, but make sure they’re reputable and not predatory.
3. Prepare a Quality Submission
Follow Submission Guidelines: Each publication has specific requirements regarding format, word count, and style. Carefully review these before submitting.
Edit and Polish: Editing is crucial to ensure your work is professional. Seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or family members to help refine it.
Create a Short Cover Letter: Introduce yourself and explain why you’re interested in being published by that outlet. Keep it brief and professional.
4. Understand Legal Requirements and Seek Parental Consent
Many publishers require minors to have a parent or guardian's permission to publish. Be prepared to provide this if asked, as it may include signing a consent form or confirming via email.
5. Submit to Multiple Outlets (Where Allowed)
Submitting to multiple publications increases your chances of getting published. Just ensure they accept simultaneous submissions, as not all publishers do.
6. Consider Self-Publishing Platforms for Wider Reach
Online platforms such as Wattpad, Medium, and Substack are excellent for building an international audience and can serve as a way to gain exposure and experience before approaching formal publications.
7. Engage with Writing Communities and Competitions
Competitions and Writing Communities: Many organizations hold writing competitions for minors, with winners being published internationally. Participating can give you a chance to be noticed and published.
8. Build a Digital Portfolio
Once you start getting published, create a digital portfolio using platforms like WordPress or LinkedIn to showcase your work. This portfolio can make future publishing easier by demonstrating your experience.

Hello,

It's great you want to pursue being published!

One possible avenue is self-publishing places like Amazon KDP. The main thing with them though is needing to fo the marketing ans design the book cover yourself or find someone that'll do it, whereas a typical publisher usually have a team already. Though Amazon KDP has an option to create a cover built into the site. This could still be a great avenue to get your work out on the market nonetheless. It's good to research what works best for what you're going for.

As others have also mentioned, it'd be good to research any of the legal stuff in your area.
