Esther’s Answer

Hi Cate!!! I love that you know what you are interested in. That's the first step to determining what you want to become.

I had a shoulder injury recently and had to go to physical therapy. My physical therapist told me that professional football teams have their own physical therapists and doctors on staff that travel with the team when they are on the road. They are the ones that rush onto the field during a game when a player is injured. He had an internship with one of the football teams and is trying to join an NFL team's medical staff now that he graduated and is a practicing physical therapist.

So you can definitely work in football and be a doctor at the same time!!! When you are ready to go to college, be sure to look for schools that specialize in sports medicine. Good luck!!!

Esther recommends the following next steps:

Meet with school counselor to determine best colleges for a career in sports medicine

Aaron’s Answer

Look into Sports Health as a field. Many universities specialize in this field. The university of New Mexico for instance, trains doctors to assist with the Olympics. This is a way you can be part of team and contributing in a meaningful way. Being a professional player is a very long shot and they have very short careers. Sports Health professionals are involved, essential and part of the team for much longer.

Nicole’s Answer

Those are two big and beautiful dreams, Cate!

Ask yourself if your passion is a hobby or a real possibility for a future career. Ask yourself if you have a network that would support a future as a professional footballer if you do see that as the career choice for you.

Another idea would be to go to school to be a doctor or physio or physical therapist and go for a job working for your favorite team to combine the two ideas. Plenty of opportunity to help professional footballers AND be in the medical field!

Whatever you choose to do, whatever path you choose to take- play full out and put 110% effort in! =] Good luck!
