Hey Michael!
States and employers have different rules and policies regarding the requirements to be a pharmacy technician and what their job description entails. In general, most states and chain pharmacies require pharmacy technicians to be certified by completing training modules, having a certain number of hours of experience working in a pharmacy setting, and passing the national pharmacy technicians certification exam. In the retail setting, which I am familiar with, pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and their job duties include the following: greeting customers, ringing up customers for prescriptions and other items at the register, answering phone calls, filling prescriptions by counting tablets/pulling other prescription items from shelves and labeling, accepting daily pharmacy deliveries from warehouse/outside vendors, administer vaccinations, make phone calls to health care providers and patients for a variety of reasons, inventory management, and maintain cleanliness in the pharmacy (dust, sweep, wipe, etc). Hope this helps!

Every state is different for becoming a pharmacy technician. You might have more or less hours for extern/internship when you are close to the end of your program. Some states require you to get licensed and certified. Other states only require licensed. Be prepared to learn a lot about medications. Buy the latest version of encyclopedia of medicine, PTCB to study.
