Hi Joanna,

It's great to see your enthusiasm for applying for scholarships while you're still in high school! Scholarships can indeed be renewed each year, but this typically depends on the specific scholarship program. Many scholarships like the Gates Scholarship or local scholarships offered by community foundations must be reapplied for annually, while some awards like the National Merit Scholarship are renewable for all four years, provided you meet certain criteria.

To keep a scholarship, you usually need to maintain a specific GPA, often around a 2.5 to 3.0, and you may also have to complete a certain number of credit hours each year. Some scholarships require you to be involved in extracurricular activities or contribute to your community, so staying active in DECA and any other programs or volunteering opportunities will certainly help you not only on your applications but also in retaining those funds. It's smart to carefully read the terms of each scholarship you apply for and keep track of any requirements they have for renewal. Best of luck with everything—you are on a promising path with your interests in coding and business!

Hi Joanna. Whether or not a scholarship can be renewed annually depends on the specific scholarship’s rules. Some scholarships are one-time awards, while others offer renewal opportunities for multiple years or even the entire duration of your education.

To maintain a renewable scholarship, you typically need to meet certain requirements, which can include:

Maintaining a specific GPA: This is a very common requirement for scholarship renewal.
Making satisfactory academic progress: This means consistently moving towards your degree completion.
Demonstrating continued financial need: Some scholarships are need-based and require updated financial information each year.
Meeting any service requirements: Some scholarships, like those for volunteer work or community involvement, require ongoing participation.
Re-applying each year: Even if you meet all other requirements, you might still need to submit a renewal application by a specific deadline.
Always carefully review the terms and conditions of your scholarship or contact the scholarship provider directly to understand the specific renewal requirements.

Hi Joanna,

Similar to the previous answers, scholarship renewal policies can differ. Those that do offer renewal typically have academic, service, and sometimes essay requirements in order to maintain the benefit. Many of these requirements should be easily achievable, given that you were able to earn the scholarship in the first place!

That being said, I wanted to offer an additional idea for how to continue gaining scholarship money once you are at your college of choice, in the event you find yourself receiving non-renewable scholarships and looking for replacement. Many universities offer Honors program scholarships awarded either during your initial acceptance to the school, or that you can become eligible for after your first or second semesters. Additionally, nationally recognized college organizations may also offer scholarships to its members. While these are often competitive to receive, they provide additional opportunity for scholarships and may help you plan out additional involvements.

Best of luck on your college search - you're headed down a great path!
