Hello Sharon! I'm more than happy to share my personal experience on how I became an accountant. While this is not the only route you can take, it might provide you with a basic understanding of what you could anticipate.
1 - The first step I took was to pursue a major in accounting at a college known for its accounting curriculum. It's beneficial if the college has a strong network of alumni in the field and if accounting firms actively recruit students from your institution.
2 - Keeping a high GPA (preferably 3.5 or above) is crucial to stay competitive for internship opportunities. Additionally, aim to accumulate 150 college credits, as this will enable you to qualify for the CPA examination in the future.
3 - During my second year in college, I sought an internship at an accounting firm. While many students apply for internships in their third year, I would advise you to start as early as possible. (Note: Some accounting firms offer programs for first-year students to get familiar with the company and for second-year students to apply for leadership programs with an internship.)
4 - Upon completing your internship, you might receive a job offer. If not, start applying for jobs during your final year in college.
5 - Congratulations, you've become an accountant! Dedicate yourself to your career, accumulate experience, and you will hopefully establish your own company someday.

Hi Sharon, You have chosen a profession that may take you to places you haven't dreamed about.
I got into my career because of a bookkeeping class I took. Accounting is a "double entry" system. Meaning that things must balance. That said, there are many branches in the Finance world that you may take. I suggest you Google "Types of Accounting Jobs and Descriptions". You will be amazed. Do you want a job in public, private, government, manufacturing, international, statistics, investment, forensic? The list is almost endless.
I suggest you find one that interests you then immerse yourself in learning about it - including education. That said, don't get tied to it. You very well might find you are in that job only a few years when something new or different might materialize.
Do your best - grow, learn and be willing to take on assignments that might not be all that exciting. An employer likes an employee that is a team player. You might never know where it might take you.
I have had 8 jobs in my career. I only applied for 3 of them. The rest I got by referrals and my willingness to "help out." That willingness allowed me to travel around the USA, to Canada and China and get offered a job where I moved 2,000 miles and worked 20 years in Mexico.
The world is yours. Seize it and good luck Sharon!
