Is there a lot of down-time working as a pharmacy technician?
I'm at Job Corps entering the pharmacy tech field, and I get the sense the job is fairly laid back. Is my assumption correct?

I wouldn't consider the majority of tech roles to be "laid back". Most retail sites are very busy. Hospital sites can have different work loads. Unfortunately, you may need to do job shadowing or get on-site interviews to be able to get a feel for each site.

If you are at a retail pharmacy, you most likely will not have regular “down-time”.
There are few exceptions to this. Depending on the location, pharmacy saturation of the area and patient population, workload can be drastically different from one pharmacy to the next.
As a retail tech I absolutely cannot think of a single time I felt “bored” or that I had completed all my daily tasks. There’s always something… lol

I have been in pharmacy 30+ years and I can tell you no matter if retail or hospital the technicians are always hustling. I would say retail usually worse than hospital. You might get lucky and find a slower location but then usually the staffing hours are adjusted down so could be worse as you have to cover everything. A good way to see would be to head down to your local retail pharmacies to see how busy the folks working there are.

The busyness of a pharmacy technician can vary based on the specific location. For instance, the two technicians at my local CVS always seem to have their hands full every time I visit.

Hi Emma,
Whenever there is down time, please remember to stay busy. Clean, organize, double check things, do anything to stay busy. The reason is to avoid being let go early. They can send you home early if there is nothing to do, but you really want to get in all your hours. You might find a more rewarding experience in long term care or compounding pharmacy.
