When studying for a test, is it best to take practice tests, study the material, or a combination of the two? #study

I often get discouraged when I try to take notes on what a teacher is saying, because I can't keep up with the current information and fall behind on taking notes on what is being explained. Then I start to worry that I am missing important information when I am still working on the notes...

Obviously, I need to follow the directions, use correct grammar and punctuation, express ideas and opinions clearly, etc. ...But, makes a winning essay a winning essay? Is there anything special I should do to make my writing and proposals stand out?
