To make a career out of drawing, start by building a strong portfolio showcasing your skills. Consider freelancing in illustration, graphic design, or concept art. You can also explore teaching, creating digital art, or selling your work through platforms like Etsy or social media. Consistency and networking are key.

Cleopatra’s Answer

Hello Kennedy,
A career out of drawing is more about being a creative, what kind of drawings do you like to make as the world of drawing is a large one.
The business of Graphic Designing is booming and it is something you should look into, sharpen your skills and wait for these opportunities. Remember, you can never stop learning as the world looses attention quickly, so you need to keep improving and keep working hard, let people see what you mean in your work from a mile away.
Good luck Kennedy and light would shine on your path.

Kim’s Answer

Hi Kennedy,

Are you interested in certain kinds of drawing? For instance, if you're mechanically or scientifically inclined, you could be a technical illustrator, architectural or engineering draftsperson, or medical illustrator--though medical illustration requires pre-med education as well as art training. If you like more expressive kinds of drawing, you could consider book illustration, fashion illustration, or advertising illustration, for starters. Also, some artists specialize in drawing clip art (stock illustrations), which can be licensed for others to reproduce in their publications, such as newsletters, presentations, and brochures. Then there are motion graphics for commercials, films, reels, games, and so on.

Here's an idea: When you watch TV, surf the internet, or read books or magazines, start taking note of all the images that interest you and what they were used for. All those cartoons, sketches, diagrams, and renderings were done by artists, using traditional (handwork) and/or digital methods, or by AI. If you start seeing a pattern in the style of artwork you like or the subjects, that may be a good starting point for your investigations.

It's great that you love drawing. Practice drawing from life as much as you can, and try all kinds of media and subjects. Keeping a sketchbook will help you see your development over time, both in terms of your skills and your interests.

You can make a career out of drawing, but you'll need something that sets you apart from the many competitors, real and artificial, in the marketplace--that can include an usual style, quick turnaround of high-quality work, exceptionally creative ideas, and strong relationship-building skills.

Best wishes to you!
