Duncan’s Answer

Quite the loaded question, Gabriella! There are ton of factors that people traditionally associate with "success." As you get older and you gain more experiences in school, work, and beyond, you'll find out what matters to YOU in terms of being successful! This will end up being more fulfilling than trying to fit the mold of what people commonly think is "successful."

But to answer your question: In the states where it shows you are as well, we typically lead in introductions post-college with "where do you work," so your career is probably the biggest marker of "successful." You can set yourself up by doing research into the roles that come out of your major and seeing what you need to do to prepare for internships, co-op's, etc so that you can get a head start on becoming a young professional!

There are many more factors but career is probably top of mind for the majority of Americans. Don't sweat it, college is a time for learning!

Arielle’s Answer

Great question! Like Duncan said, "success" can be defined in many different ways!

In general, I think it is important to be open-minded, curious, and flexible. You will encounter lots of different people from lots of different backgrounds: be willing to learn from them and their experiences, which will expand your own perspective and understanding of the world. Continuously explore and expand your current knowledge beyond what you do in your day-to-day life (for example, if you have a job as a software developer, it is important to always be learning about new technology beyond what you work on and considering the direction the industry is going). But the world can be unpredictable; recently, we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic that the way we do work was dramatically shifted (many employees & students had to switch to working in a completely remote environment on short notice!). While the pandemic is an extreme example, no matter what you are doing, you will always encounter situations where it is important to be flexible and resilient (for example, in a more everyday case than the pandemic, perhaps someone on your team is out sick and you have to figure out what to do).

No matter where your career or life path takes you, having these characteristics will help you expand your perspective and understanding to be compassionate and productive in today's society!
