Start by visualizing your ultimate goal, then plan your steps in reverse order. Ask yourself, what is your dream job? If you're unsure, consider these questions: What are your interests? What subjects do you enjoy? Utilize Google to explore potential career paths. Take a personality test to discover careers that align with your personality type. A fantastic, cost-free resource for this is 16personalities.com, where you can take a personality test.
Once you've identified your dream job, investigate the requirements to achieve it. For instance, if you aspire to be a nurse, you'll need to take numerous science courses in college. Therefore, it's advisable to concentrate on science subjects during high school. Remember, high school lays the foundation for college, and college prepares you for life.
Keep in mind, life is a long journey, and your interests today might evolve over time. You may want to do something different in your 30s or 40s. So, when choosing a major in college, don't limit yourself to a very specific field. Explore a few areas you enjoy, providing you with flexibility to shift or broaden your career path in the future.

Hi Clover,
You may want to start looking at the types of scholarships that are available. What kind of scholarships are there? Scholarships usually have a focus in some way. For example, I am in an employee resource group at AT&T where we support Hispanic/LatinX youth. There are a variety opportunities with the groups at AT&T. However, there are a large amount of scholarships with focuses like STEM, Art, and other areas of study. (I know a young person who earned a scholarship by winning a writing competition.) You should review scholarships to see what they are expecting from you. Many include your grade point average and where you live. Also, check out what scholarships may be offered by the university that you want to attend. Some universities have scholarships funded by alumni of the school.
I like that you are getting started early. This will let you be prepared for what is needed to apply, including recommendations from teachers or information on volunteer activities that you have done.
Other advice for you:
- Apply for scholarships every year that you are at university, not just your freshman year. Use the resources at the school to find other scholarships.
- Make sure that you apply for multiple scholarship. You can earn more than one.
