Thank you comment icon The organization where you feel supported is the best one to join in college. You're not limited to one organization. Unlike business, where knowing the "right" person can help your career, medical school requires you to go through a rigorous application process focussed on "what" you know. For this reason, social organizations such as fraternities and sororities are less important. Focus on grades, volunteering and research. Consider joining service organizations or premedical societies to help connect you to like-minded individuals.

Hi Alexis - I think this is a great question and clearly you are being proactive to think about what organizations to join! My overarching advise is not to spread yourself too thin. This was a mistake that I made in my early years of college by joining one too many "things". Whether volunteer activates, organizations, sorority, athletics, etc. I learned that quality is better than quantity (That's what I learned - but everyone is different!) I agree with other responses here that you should join something that you are passionate about. The more passion you have behind a cause - the more you will enjoy the time spent with that organization or group. My advice would be to establish yourself with one or two organizations / groups at first before expanding further. See if you can handle the extracurricular workload, while still performing on your normal academic requirements. Consider a leadership position if you are looking for extra. Often times, an extracurricular organization should be something that is FUN and an escape from the every day study/homework scene. Evaluate your different opportunities and remember that you can always adjust course during your college experience. I hope this helps and best of luck!

Don't limit yourself to just one organization. You could join one related to your major for better exposure to career and networking opportunities and another one that's more social for community service as well as networking opportunities. Just make sure you are going to be active in the organization(s) you decide to join. They more you put into it, they more you will get out. So seek leadership roles in order to demonstrate leadership and managerial responsibilities to potential employers.

Join the org that will gave you the most experience for what you think you would want to do after college. That way you get hands on expereince before you have to make tough life decisions after. Most schools have clubs and orgs for everyone, dont limit yourself to one as well But make sure to find balance in order to keep up with your classes because they can be time consuming

In my opinion, one of the best organizations to join is the folks who do the Admissions tours. NO matter what school, these are a group of the most enthusiastic, positive, and influential students at your school. They are passionate about their school, the city, and the student body. It is also a good way to learn about the history of your school and meet so many people. It is gratifying when a student comes up to you and says "2 years ago you gave me my tour and are the main reason I decided to come to school here!"

Good luck

Hi Alexis and thank you for your question. Joining organizations while in college can be a great way to build your skills, network with peers and professionals, and make the most of your college experience. While every college offers different organizations, I wanted to share some types of organizations for you to consider.

1. Professional organizations: It is always helpful to join a professional organization related to your field of study. For example, if you are studying engineering, you may want to join the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) or the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). These organizations offer opportunities for networking, professional development, and career advancement.

2. Student government: Student government organizations offer leadership opportunities and a voice in campus decision-making. Joining student government can help you develop your leadership and communication skills, as well as give you a sense of community and belonging.

3. Service organizations: Service organizations offer opportunities to give back to your community and make a positive impact. For example, you could join a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for those in need. Service organizations can help you develop your interpersonal skills, as well as your sense of civic responsibility.

4. Cultural organizations: Cultural organizations offer opportunities to explore and celebrate different cultures and backgrounds. For example, you could join a club dedicated to African American culture or a club dedicated to international students. These organizations can help you broaden your horizons, make new friends, and develop a deeper understanding of different cultures.

5. Sports organizations: Sports organizations offer opportunities to stay active and compete with others. For example, you could join a club sports team or a recreational sports league. These organizations can help you stay physically fit, develop teamwork skills, and relieve stress.

These are just a few examples of the types of organizations you may want to consider while in college. The key is to find organizations that align with your interests and goals, and that offer opportunities for growth and development. Joining organizations can be a great way to make the most of your college experience and build a foundation for success after graduation. I hope this helps. Best of luck!
