Ken’s Answer

You are asking a very important question, as you have more responsibility and freedom regarding the use of your time in college vs high school. I would like to present to you several suggestions from other people which reflect my experience in college.

Ken recommends the following next steps:

Balance College and life: ## https://www.unigo.com/in-college/college-experience/creating-a-workschool-balance-a-college-student-perspective ## ## http://www.mycollegesuccessstory.com/academic-success-tools/college-life-balance.html ## ## http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/000241/ ##
Also, it would be a good idea to talk to your academic adviser about becoming involved in professional associations that to which people in your major area of interest belong, so that you might form relationships with people who have common interests. These relationships will greatly assist you during your college years and throughout your career. Also, through these associations you can become involved with upper classmen who can help you to navigate the world of academia at your school.
Also, your can talk to the person at your high school who tracks and works with graduates of your high school, as this person can help you to meet and talk to graduates of your high school who are attending that new school and can assist you with becoming more comfortable and settling in at your new school. They have experiences that will greatly assist you along the way.

Treat school like a job. Get up early, get to work and when your work is done at the end of the day, you can spend time on social life or organizations.

Go to class. Plan to spend 2-3 hours studying for every hour of lecture. Attend your professor's office hours and any TA review sessions. If there is a test bank, use that as a study tool to understand what your professor wants you to focus on for the test.

Jacob’s Answer

Hello, Azaleah,

As far as time management goes, I think the first step is to get into a routine. Eat at similar times, get enough sleep, exercise, and have blocks of time for studying. There are a lot of techniques to make your studying more efficient. One I like is called the Pomodoro Technique. Let's say you are completing a reading assignment for a class or writing a paper. Set a timer for 25 minutes. During those 25 minutes, the only thing you focus on is finishing the reading or studying. Do not allow any distractions. I like this technique since it forces you to break down bigger tasks into more manageable chunks and it forces you to take breaks, which helps keep your mind fresh. If you're looking for some helpful items that can limit the number of distractions in your life, check out some of the sites and apps I linked in the suggested next steps section.

I hope this helps - good luck!

You should start college planning to study every day. Attend your classes. Do the homework. When you find a class difficult, attend office hours early in the semester. If you continue to struggle, get a tutor.

When you study every day and keep up with your classes, you can better plan extracurricular activities without compromising your grades.
