What if I want two totally different jobs and want to pro-sue both of them?

Robotics/Mechanical Engineer and Acting/writing. I want to do both because I love theater and books, plus I do super well in ELA. But I also really want to do Robotics, kind of like Tony Stark. I really like building mechanical stuff. Should I do one on the side? Please help.

Hunter, you're a modern-day polymath, with a unique blend of talents in both the scientific and artistic realms!

What a fortunate position to be in!

Both Chrissy and June have shared insightful thoughts. The world of Theater and Theme Parks are just the beginning! Consider Franz "Faz" Fazakas, who was a key engineer for Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, and for Disney (https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Faz_Fazakas). Here's another link showcasing movies that have benefited from the genius of creative engineers in storytelling (https://movieweb.com/best-animatronics-in-movies-ranked/).

Beyond theater, there are also numerous examples of individuals who have successfully combined their scientific/engineering skills with writing (https://thebookslist.com/scientists-that-were-also-novelists/).

When it comes to writing, Stephen King's advice resonates: “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There's no way around these two things that I'm aware of, no shortcut.” Hunter, remember, you're in good company! The internet is filled with inspiring quotes from countless writers that resonate with your passion for both engineering (a.k.a. sciences) and writing.

One crucial piece of advice to keep in mind is that you don't have to pick one over the other. As you navigate through school, university, and eventually your career, let your heart guide you. Connect with individuals who share your interests and have expertise in the fields you're passionate about. Remember, your journey is flexible. If you ever find yourself dissatisfied, you can always alter your course. You're the author of your life, and revisions are always permitted!

Your dual passions are truly a blessing! Your future is brimming with potential! Keep excelling in school AND continue to nurture your writing!

Best Regards,

Mel.

June’s Answer

Firstly, Impressive! Wow. Lots of respect for engineers and people good with mechanical stuff.

I absolutely agree with what Chrissy Mobley said above, there are so many jobs in theatrical industries that need people who are multifaceted. You can familiarize yourself with a Theater company by working tech with them first, get into the back-bone of the facility, see how it works, and since you also love to act, schedule auditions! Not only can you stay in the Theater field, if you don't get the part, you can always fall back into a comfortable tech role. I would highly recommend that if you prefer one a lot more over the other, prioritize that and figure out a way to work them together.

Remember!! It's also always okay to have hobbies. Finding something you love to do is incredibly important, and if you want to do both, maybe figure out a way to do one in your spare time, or as a second job. Good luck!!

You can do whatever you want. Learn the skills you will need for them all. You need to pick one so you can generate an income and then do the rest on your spare time. I wrote poetry and novels in my spare time for years. Good luck

Chrissy’s Answer

Theater! You can do all of these!!! Disney too! Lots of Theaters have tons of mechanical props that need designers and maintaining, plus you'd be right beside the acting, so if your a strong actor, you get an inside view and can audition for roles!

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Hunter !

I am impressed with your expression of ambition in two very exciting fields of work. I can tell you that you can do both, but I would be wrong. You wouldn't be able to be a professional engineer as well as a professional Actor at the same time. You have some very awesome theatres in your area, so I can understand your inspiration for wanting to be an actor.

What it all boils down to is that while you are in college, you will make a decision about where and how to place your talents. It's too soon to tell which will be your professional career. Sometimes the experience gained while in college reaffirms which career to choose. Be a professional Engineer and do community theatre when you have the time, or dedicate your entire time to being an Actor ? You have to approach a career in Acting or a career in Engineering with the intention of giving it your full commitment. Once you actually see how the career goes, it's then that you may realize what to commit to. Employers do not hire actors and casting people hire actors that are available 100% of the time. So, keep doing your acting and writing and studies for engineering for right now. You have a lot of time and more experience to gain before you can or have to decide what to do.

If you want to explore both fields of work, you can look into the commitments you'd have to make in the respect of work schedule, out of pocket expenses, traveling, time spent interviewing for engineer jobs or auditioning for acting projects, where you plan to live and how much and who or what your supports could be for both careers. You can always write whenever you have the time, but being a professional writer can be time consuming, too.

So, pace yourself, take it one step at a time and know that you don't need to make a decision right now before you know more about the careers. You can do anything you put your mind to, just certain careers cannot be done simultaneously if you want to give it your all. And that is perfectly fine !

Best wishes to you in all you do !

Violet’s Answer

Yes, if you have more than one passion you should go after both.

People are more than just one thing, if you have several things you love, you have to pursue all of them or you'll never be happy or, at least, you'll never be satisfied. The "trick" is how you balance your various pursuits.

I would tell my younger self to begin by working on one thing at a time until you find a way to balance everything, so you can pursue everything all at once. Start with something that doesn't require too much schooling, in your case, acting. Then you can actually work as a performer while you complete the "heavier" discipline, your engineering degree, which will take much longer to do.

The point is to find that balance. Talk to counselors, work out your schedule, make the most of your time. Work up to eventually always pursing all of your passions. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed or you'll never finish anything and never give-up anything you love doing.

James Constantine’s Answer

Good Day Hunter!

Pursuing Dual Careers in Robotics and Acting/Writing

1. Understanding Your Interests and Skills

It’s commendable that you have a passion for both robotics/mechanical engineering and acting/writing. Each of these fields requires a unique set of skills, creativity, and dedication. Robotics involves technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and hands-on experience with mechanical systems, while acting and writing demand creativity, emotional intelligence, and communication skills. Recognizing your strengths in English Language Arts (ELA) suggests that you have a solid foundation for writing.

2. Exploring Educational Pathways

To pursue both careers effectively, consider the educational pathways available for each field:

Robotics/Mechanical Engineering: Typically requires a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Look for programs that offer hands-on experience through labs or internships. Many universities also have robotics clubs or competitions that can enhance your practical skills.

Acting/Writing: This can be pursued through theater programs, workshops, or creative writing courses. Many actors start by participating in school plays or community theater to gain experience. Writing can be honed through classes focused on storytelling, scriptwriting, or literature.

3. Time Management and Balancing Both Careers

Balancing two distinct career paths will require excellent time management skills:

Prioritize Your Time: Create a schedule that allocates time for studying engineering concepts as well as practicing acting and writing. Consider dedicating specific days of the week to focus on each discipline.

Integrate Your Interests: Look for ways to combine your passions. For instance, you could write scripts that incorporate themes from technology or create performances that explore scientific concepts.

Part-Time Opportunities: Seek part-time jobs or internships in both fields during your studies. This will provide real-world experience while allowing you to build connections in both industries.

4. Networking and Building Experience

Networking is crucial in both fields:

Join Relevant Organizations: Participate in engineering societies (like IEEE) as well as theater groups or writing clubs. These organizations often provide resources, mentorship opportunities, and networking events.

Attend Workshops and Conferences: Engage with professionals from both fields by attending workshops related to robotics (such as maker fairs) and theater festivals.

Create a Portfolio: For acting/writing, develop a portfolio showcasing your work—scripts you’ve written or performances you’ve participated in. For robotics, document projects you’ve completed or competitions you’ve entered.

5. Long-Term Career Considerations

As you progress through your education:

Evaluate Your Passion Over Time: It’s important to regularly assess which field resonates more with you as you gain experience in both areas.

Consider Future Trends: The intersection of technology and the arts is growing; roles such as interactive media designer or technical consultant for film may allow you to blend both interests creatively.

In conclusion, pursuing dual careers in robotics/mechanical engineering and acting/writing is not only possible but can also be rewarding if approached thoughtfully with effective planning and time management strategies.
