What possible careers could I pursue which allow me to create games and connect people online through those games?

I love to play Diablo. I enjoy how it connects people and creates opportunity to share information for a common good while still creating a sense of enjoyment even if you're with people that you may not know personally. I was curious as to what possibilities are available for me to help recreate this feeling and joy that comes from this. #information-technology #video-games #software-development #gaming #video-game-design

If you want to create games. You can start your first step today. Decide what platform you want your games to use. For example, iOS would be for the iPhone and iPad. HTML and JavaScript would be for online games, etc. Once you decide, get a introductory book about programming in that language. Learn as much as you can and start with a simple project. As you advance, you will soon be able to create a game.

It is important that you like reading, solving problems, and learning new things. Becoming a good programmer takes a lot of time and effort. But, if you like doing it, then it is like you are just playing all day and getting paid for it.

Thank you comment icon Thanks this helps a lot I really want to go in this route in the future. Colby

Programmers create video games. Marketers study how to delight consumers through a product. Maybe a double major in programming and marketing.

There are so many aspects to video game development you can and should consider. A career in gaming includes production, design, art, engineering, QA(quality assurance = testing), marketing, etc. All of these positions plus many more help create and get the word out for great video games. If you like coding you may want to consider an engineering or computer science major. The awesome part is you don't have to wait until college to begin learning how to code.

Once you are in college make sure and actively seek out a summer internships - this is how I was introduced to the video game industry. In the meantime there are plenty of online programs that introduce and teach you to computer science, if you haven't already looked into this you should. Some suggestions: codeacademy.com, coursera.com, edX.com.

While engineering is one way to make games but there are many others. If you want to help everyone come together, meet deadlines and channel your teams creative efforts, a career in production may be for you. I encourage you to follow your passions whether artistic, engineering or otherwise as there are many opportunities to excel in the gaming industry.
