A career in modeling often seems a glamorous one to enter, but there’s work involved that will require the proper resources and use of finances as with any other career. However, getting started with the basics doesn’t have to cost you thousands of dollars. Follow these steps and you can launch a modeling career without worrying about going broke.
1️⃣ CREATE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT
There are many agencies who scout models via Instagram. Therefore, when an agency is scrolling to find new face(s), make it easy for them to see your potential as a model. You can achieve this by posting photos that clearly show your face and your full body. Avoid filters and definitely do not "Photoshop" yourself to the point where you would be deceiving the agency as to your real appearance. Your Instagram is your way of showing your personality, so be sure to create a page that has both videos and images. In doing so, refrain from an overabundance of other friends on your site, as this may confuse the agency as to the owner of that page.
2️⃣ FIND PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES
There are websites where photographers, makeup artists and stylists are also looking to gain experience and shoot with others in the industry as well as where companies post opportunities to model in photo and video shoots. These offer a great way to get experience in front of the camera with often little or no cost to you. When researching photographers online, be sure to ask pertinent questions about the details of your shoot to ensure you’re pursuing an opportunity in a safe manner. You can always make mention that you’ll be bringing a parent as a way to gauge the response from the person you’re in contact with as it relates to your well-being. It’s important to note though that in the professional world of modeling, once hired for a shoot through your modeling agency, models are not allowed to bring guests to their shoots unless that your under the age of 18.
3️⃣ AQUIRE MODELING SKILLS
Believe it or not, many models are required to have some sense of acting ability as well, so while you look at modeling listings on websites you can also explore the acting opportunities offered. If your goal is to strictly model, you can still gain experience in the industry and get a foot in the door by accepting background roles. This allows you to network with individuals in the industry, many of whom are also signed to modeling agencies who can then potentially introduce you to their modeling agency.
4️⃣ FIND REPRESENTATION
On at least 70% of modeling agency websites, there’s an area in which aspiring models can submit their photos for consideration. Simply do a Google search of modeling agencies based on your current locale or the area in which you wish to move to for modeling. Upon finding a list of agencies and further doing your research to ensure that your agency of interest is reputable, read their website to see the specifics on the types of models they represent and how to submit for consideration. Agencies require models to submit digitals online. If an agency is interested in potentially offering you a contract, they’ll reach out to you directly upon receiving your submission form online. Don’t be alarmed if you don’t hear from the agency right away as some agencies can take several weeks to respond. Some agencies on the other hand may not respond if they feel that you’re not the ideal fit for them at the time.

Hello, Joseph !
Simply taking modeling lessons at a Modeling School does not make you rich or famous. If you are in high school, under 18, one of your parents will need to guide and oversee your training and sign contracts and attend your modeling projects so first check with your parents availability for transportation and accompaniment while going to modeling school and if and when you obtain work. Some of the modeling assignments may take you away from school, too, so your parent will have to okay the whole thing. Your parents will also have to agree to pay for Modeling School.
If you are between 13 and 17 years old, obtain a work permit, according to your State, from your school. This is because during the time you are in modeling school, they may send students on "go sees" (which are auditions and interviews with employers) and if you get the gig, you will need a work permit.
The most ineffective way to approach modeling would be with the intent to become rich and famous. It's not all glamorous or lucrative. The final product is what is exciting (and pleasing the person who hires you) and if you struggle with thinking of fame and fortune, you may not enjoy a comfortable modeling experience.
If you were ready to be a model now, you'd know exactly what to do to get work. Since it's a time in which you need to train and learn, the best way would be to go to Modeling School. I would refer you to some schools where you live, but you didn't indicate that information. Keep in mind that many modeling schools do not accept everyone that applies. They will evaluate you for potential.
Modeling has nothing to do with fame and fortune. It has to do with having an artistic sense, being able to show a look that the employer wants and having good communication and social skills. You will need to know how to socialize with a diverse group of people. Your parent will need to know how to represent you and help you with finding work. Once you are 18, you can do it all on your own.
As you proceed in Modeling School, you will learn the ins and outs of getting work. You will not choose a Modeling Agent, they choose you, so you will have to network a lot in this field of work and get people to know who you are. Consider where you live and if it has a strong modeling community or opportunities for modeling. The hubs for it are in New York City and Los Angeles.
No one can plan how their modeling career will go, so take it slowly and start at modeling school. From there, you will learn your type, your potential, obtain skills and learn about the variety of work in media. Take some acting lessons which will help you as a model. You will be expected to be able to work runway, in film, photo shoots, TV and in person assignments. It's a lot of work and if your true passion for it is to contribute to media and you have an artistic sense, you will have a satisfying career. Showing that your motivation is fame and fortune will turn people off and appear as unprofessional.
~Do not present yourself as a model until you know exactly how to model and you and your parent are aware of how this business is run. I highly advise this. ~ Do NOT post your photos on social media to be a model. Let your Modeling School coach you in person. ~
If you have any specific questions about any aspect of modeling that pertains to your specific circumstance, do feel free to return here to ask more questions. I hope that my advice is insightful ! Best wishes to you !
