Hi Heer,
It’s amazing that you’ve discovered your passion for forensic psychology at such a young age! Don’t let negative responses discourage you—many great achievements come from pursuing paths that others may not fully understand. Let’s break down how you can turn your dream into reality:
1. Forensic Psychology After Humanities and Psychology
Your background in humanities and psychology is already a strong foundation for forensic psychology. It combines understanding human behavior (psychology) with legal systems (law and criminology).
In India, you can continue to pursue this field step by step:
- After Class 12:
- Aim for a Bachelor’s in Psychology (BA or BSc) with courses in criminology or sociology if available.
- Some colleges also offer interdisciplinary programs in psychology and criminal justice.
- Post-Graduation:
- Pursue a Master’s in Forensic Psychology in India or abroad.
- Renowned Indian universities like the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Gujarat offer specialized programs in forensic psychology.
- Further Specialization:
- Consider doing a PhD or certification programs in forensic psychology or criminal psychology to deepen your expertise.
2. Steps to Build Your Profile
- Take Relevant Courses: Enroll in online courses or certifications in forensic psychology or criminology through platforms like Coursera or edX.
- Volunteer or Intern: Look for internships with psychologists, NGOs, or legal firms to gain exposure to the field.
- Learn Legal Basics: Understanding the law is essential, so consider taking introductory law courses or workshops.
- Stay Curious: Read books and watch documentaries about forensic psychology to stay inspired and learn more about the field.
3. Addressing Negative Responses
It’s common to face doubts when choosing an unconventional career, but here’s how you can handle it:
- Educate Others: Explain how forensic psychology helps in criminal investigations, rehabilitation, and even national security.
- Stay Focused: Remind yourself why you’re passionate about this field and how much it excites you.
- Find Support: Surround yourself with people who encourage your dreams, such as mentors, teachers, or online communities.
4. Studying Abroad
If you’re open to studying forensic psychology abroad, many universities in countries like the US, UK, and Canada offer excellent programs. Research scholarships like the Fulbright Scholarship or Chevening Scholarship to support your studies financially.
5. Roadmap to Success
- Focus on excelling in your Class 12 exams to secure admission to a top psychology program.
- During your bachelor’s, build a strong academic record and participate in internships or research projects.
- Apply to a reputable master’s program in forensic psychology and look for opportunities to work or intern in relevant settings.
6. Remember This
Your passion for forensic psychology is unique and valuable. It’s a growing field, and India needs skilled forensic psychologists to contribute to law enforcement, justice, and mental health. Believe in yourself and your dreams—you are capable of achieving them!
Stay strong and keep pushing forward. You’ve got this!
Best wishes!

Hello, Heer !
You can go to University to study your chosen career. Thank you for coming to Career Village for the information if you haven't contacted the University yet. You can verify it with the university you're planning on attending and the path is pretty much basic and not complicated.
To become a forensic psychologist in India, you would first attend a four year University majoring in Psychology. Keep in mind that you will need to be a basic Psychologist and forensic is just one realm of the field. You would then go for your Masters Degree in either Psychology or Forensic Psychology.. As a psychology major in both undergraduate school and for your Masters Degree, you will have courses in criminal behavior, legal systems, and psychological assessment as part of what is offered. You also need to go for a Doctorate Degree and by that time you'll know the process. I would choose the Psychology Major because at any time, you can work in forensic, but you can also work in any other realm of psychology. A focus or degree in forensic psychology will limit the types of work you may possibly want in addition or if you feel like doing other types of work in this field sooner or later. You can always discuss this with a guidance counselor at your school or come back here to ask more questions. You will also need to gain experience through doing volunteer work which is required in your country.
So focus on being a psychologist as it will prepare you to have a wide range of possible work, including forensic work. There will always be the opportunity to learn forensic psych. as as a Psychology major. There are also trainings and conferences that you can attend that are on the subject of Forensic Psychology.
Not all of the Humanities are connected to psychology, however. In your country, the subjects which are considered Humanities and related to your career goal are psychology, sociology, and perhaps political science may be remotely related to psychology, so the other humanities will not be beneficial nor would a degree in Humanities qualify you to be a Psychologist.
I hope that this clarifies it for you, but by all means, do return here again to ask more questions. Best wishes to you in all you do !
