How to get more involved in the modeling world?
To be more specific, how to build a portfolio/a name for myself. I'm 16 and want to start thinking about a potential career in modeling, just tips are needed especially since it's pretty barebones in my area so more on hands actions aren't available.

You are centrally located at three or four hours driving time from Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco which do have modeling communities for work once you are ready to start modeling professionally. Starting out learning modeling takes more than just "tips". It is a serious career that requires a vast amount of technique and knowledge of the business and lots of training and experience if you want to do it professionally. You will have to go to Modeling School for the best foundation and to know how to be a Model.
Since there are no Modeling Schools or Modeling Agencies in Visalia, this may pose a challenge for you. The only thing I can think of for you right now since you are 16 years old is to form a fashion extracurricular or club at your school, inviting students that are into fashion, photography and things connected to make up, fashion designing, etc. This is something that you can do that will give you practice. If you are still serious about modeling two years from now, you can consider relocating to Sacramento or San Francisco. I cannot advise thinking about Los Angeles at this time. New York City, NY is also a huge hub, but it's a huge step moving to a very expensive city.
I would advise reading some Modeling Agency websites, but do not register until you know exactly how to model in print, Television, Video, Still Photos and Live Projects. You will have to be available 24/7 for go sees and working on projects. Read about the business end of modeling and what is trending for types of models. Please understand that photos in a portfolio are not enough. You must go to modeling school to learn this career. They do not teach you while working as a model. Learn the top fashion designers and their styles. So for now, utilize your school's resources and once you are 18, you can make some decisions, but I do caution about trying to get modeling work before you are formally trained and before you have substantial experience.
If you are thinking about becoming a model because it looks easy, glamorous and fun, then those models you've seen did their job successfully. It's not all comfortable and easy. Many demands are put on models like working in extreme weather, long photo shoots, and to constantly look good physically as well as many other situations. Being well-informed about the business can confirm your thoughts about this career. It is something you can do professionally for a few years and then go into a different type of work. Older models do get work, usually for print ads and commercials. You also need to know that you may not get work projects one after the other and that there may be gaps between projects. If you're alright with all of this, modeling just might be your calling.
The best way we can help you here is for you to ask very specific questions about modeling. It's not a generalized field of work and no one can tell you if or how you'll get work. It's a very people oriented and networking kind of business and you have to find a community where you can interact and get people to know you. Do not skip steps for this career, for example getting photos and a portfolio and start submitting yourself for work. There's so much to learn both professionally and personally for a career in Modeling. Ask specific questions about it because it'll be very important for you to be well-informed and based on your own experiences, you can make the decision for what you want to do.
I do not advise using social media for the purposes of modeling. There are professional ways to go about this and contrary to what a lot of people think, putting your photos on social media for the purpose of Modeling can cause unwanted issues. Professional Models in a mainstream, serious career are not doing showcases on social media, It's just not the right venue for serious models.
