Hi Ashanti,

Great question and answer would be vary by type and level of interview. Here are few things which should be consistently followed in all interviews:

1) Know your Interview subject/topic very well - Prepare and conduct mock-up's based on details mentioned in JD.

2) Show your willingness to learn in case the job needs more than what you already know.

3) Show humility and always be humble during discussions and providing examples.

4) Be respectful of interviewer's time and try to stay relevant to discussion.

5) Be positive, good listener and don't be afraid to ask any clarifications on questions asked to you.

All the best.

Ashanti, interesting question. I have found that during interview, the interviewer likes to see an attitude that works well with the culture of the office. Different personalities are suited for different jobs and it's good to have an attitude and personality that works well with that of the office. An accounting firm is probably going to be looking for a different attitude than that of an environmental NGO.

That being said, most if not all employers wants to see that you are a hard working, honest, and dedicated person who would be a good fit with the company. Do your best, show off your good traits, and demonstrate why you should be hired.

Best,

Austin

Betsy’s Answer

Hi Ashanti, that's a very good question with an answer that depends some on the employer and the skills they are looking for in a potential employee. Generally speaking, there are a few things you should keep in mind when interviewing. Your attitude should come across as confident, but not cocky. You should be knowledgeable about your successes and strengths, and willing to discuss them citing specific examples or situations. If you're not going to brag about yourself, nobody else will be there to do it for you. Make sure you put your best foot forward. You'll also want to have an interested attitude. You should try to have follow up questions for your interviewer, be it general questions or something specific they were talking about. Don't be afraid to address your weaknesses if asked about it. Look at it as a chance to talk about weaknesses as an opportunity for improvement and growth.

It's also important to be prepared for questions the interviewer might ask, so that might include researching the industry, looking at potential interview questions, as well as doing a realistic assessment of your skills and experiences. Best of luck in your interviews!

Betsy recommends the following next steps:

Self-assess your skills and experiences
Research potential job and industry
Be confident and engaging in the interview.
