Hi ashanti,

I am not currently in a high position where I work but I have managed people before. The biggest challenge of a role above individual contributor is that you are often held accountable for the actions of others, those who report to you. When I managed a team of people, I was accountable for every missed deadline, incorrect work done, angry customers, etc. That can be the most challenging expectation - that I know everything about what each person is doing and why they made the mistake.

Serge V.’s Answer

Hi Ashanti,

This is a great question!! When you are in a certain position, you are held to different standards. When you are in a managerial position, you have to lead by example so your employers can see how you carry your professionalism. For example, being to work early rather being on time, always look sharp in the work environment, treat people with respect and communicate with staff members professionally. In all positions you will, you must be a professional and have a great character.

Great question! When you are looking towards a higher position or you hold a high position you have a responsibility to hold yourself with high integrity. All eyes are on you! How you carry yourself (with confidences) how you look (professionals) and how you act! (Mature and professionals) on and off the clock. People look to you for what they aspire to be and you must take that role seriously! I always tell my team, work and carry yourself as you are always applying for that next position.

I hope this this answers your question! : )

Scott’s Answer

Hi Ashanti, this is an awesome question! In my experience, whenever someone is in a position of higher importance, have to be aware that your behavior is an example for others to follow. Therefore, you have to be sure that you are acting in an ethical and appropriate way so that other employees looking up to you can follow suit. In terms of being held to different standards, whenever you have a promotion or position of higher promotion you will have higher expectations from your employers. However do not fear! If you ever feel stressed or overwhelmed, you should always feel free to ask for help. It is important to recognize that at certain points, everyone needs support and it should not be frowned upon to do so.

Hope this advice helps!

Corrine’s Answer

Hello Ashanti,

I don't believe your ethics should be different no matter what the position. Your knowledge and abilities my be held to a higher standard in a higher position. You must remember, however, that you may be in a higher position because of your leadership ability but not necessarily your skills. In other words, you will probably have people on your team who know more about the technical aspects of your job or may have more customer service experience. That is why we work in teams - to pull together the best skills and knowledge to complete the work.
