Thanks for the great question. To answer it, I would like to share some basics with you.
Persuing the any engineering career initially requires you to have proficiency in the subjects such as maths, physical, chemistry technical drawing etc.
Automotive engineering is a specialized field of study. The course content, in practice, covers all the basics you need to have a successful career.
To start with, design skills are important. This is the ability to put parts together to perform a certainly function that produces a desired output.
Mathematical skills will enable you to identify & quantify the forces that are at play so you can size your components to withstand them.
The traditional car engine is basically a heat engine. An understanding of how heat energy is converted into mechanical energy is important. A field of study called thermodynamics these principles.
Transmission of power from the engine to the wheels is usually covered under machine design & mechanics of machines.
The car engine & the transmission system have moving parts that experience friction that results in wear & tear. Lubricants are required to minimize this friction. This area is covered under fluid mechanics.
Once the detailed design is ready, construction begins. Material selection is important at this stage. Materials Science helps us to understand the properties of Engineering materials so we can chose the right ones and size them correctly.
On completion of construction, the product is ready for testing for functionality.
In the event that failures occur, problem solving skills are required to identify & resolve root causes.
This skill is still handy once the product is in trade.
