Hi Calissa,

That is a good question. According to www.nursing.org, "the labor and delivery nurses assist pregnant women throughout the women's childbirth experience, from early labor through delivery and the immediate postpartum period. They coach mothers through difficult contractions, offering encouragement and advice on pain management. They also monitor both the baby and the mother’s tolerance for labor, and stay alert for any potential medical complications that can occur. They also administer medications, including epidurals, and assist physicians or midwives with the actual delivery. After the mother gives birth, the nurse extends their care to the newborn and mother’s needs. They also help the mom with the baby’s first breastfeeding."

It is an interesting and rewarding career if you do decide to go that route and become a labor and delivery nurse. The outcome for each women is different and so is the experience not only for her and the family but for all the healthcare members participating in bringing this new little person into the world happen as best as possible. Much of their experiences in delivery will be a smoother one than for others. For some mothers, it's an adventure and for some it can be a miserable experience for months until the day of delivery. Everyone's situation is unique and some of it will depend on the prenatal care they have had all through out their pregnancy, if they gained weight, their health, genetics, age, how many pregnancies they have had before, if it will be natural, induced or if they undergo cesarean, etc. So many factors play a big part in each woman's pregnancy, so for a nurse, I can't imagine every experience not being a big deal. Hey Calissa! I have been a Labor and Delivery nurse for around 5 years now and to say I love it would be an understatement. It is definitely my calling as they like to say. One of the reasons I chose Labor and Delivery nursing is while some things are routine most days always look different and you never know when something new will walk off the elevator. As a labor and delivery nurse you will have to upkeep many certifications and skills. Such as:

Patient assessment
Pain assessment
Care plan updating and finalizing
Promotion of good body mechanics during labor i.e. peanut balls
Turning and repositioning patients that may be epiduralized
Assisting anesthesia with epidurals
Medication administration
Cervical dilation exams
Leopolds maneuvers
Assisting physician with procedures and exams
Assisting with c-sections (pre-, intra-, and post-operative care)
Admissions
Triages
Discharges
Patient education
EDUCATION for laboring patients!!
Coaching women through childbirth
Vital sign monitoring
IV management
Electronic charting
Fetal strip monitoring

I am sure I have missed some things but I hope this gives you a clearer picture of some of the responsibilities requires by a Labor and Delivery nurse.
