For those in the sports and entertainment industry what advice can you give.

My dream is to work for sports media, or directly with a sports team. Furthermore, I would also really like to work for entertainment media with my focus being television and film.

Scott’s Answer

Working in the sports industry isn't as glamorous as it may appear. For the small percentage who are in the limelight there are hundreds of others who are behind the scenes making everything work flawlessly with a lot of effort.

If you truly desire to work in sports & entertainment then you'll need the following:

  1. Know where you want to go in Sports & Entertainment - specific sport, specific company, etc!
  2. Have a great work ethic, you'll find some who work slowly or lazily, and it's frustrating, especially when you've been working long days & longer nights
  3. Work with integrity. In sports & entertainment people will recognize your efforts more than anything
  4. While you may have high expectations of a career in sports & entertainment, expect to start on a lower level and have to work your way up. With that being said, have a good idea of where you want to go, otherwise your career could go sideways.
  5. With all this in mind, start making contacts now. Start talking to people in the business. Reach out to local sports & entertainment employers and people in those industries and do mock interviews with them. Building a network now will only help you in the future. If you know there's a specific industry you want to pursue, then attempt to work events with the organization. There are always game day operations and openings.

Scott recommends the following next steps:

Reach out to local sports & entertainment companies and employees to do mock interviews
Research the area of sports & entertainment you want to pursue
Build a professional network
Find event openings to start working so you have a better idea & understanding of what it takes to work in sports & entertainment
