Hello, Zachary !
It is so thoughtful of you to want to help out your family by working. Without knowing you or the landscape of your town, it's hard to say what you are qualified to do, so I would suggest speaking with your guidance counselor or school social worker for referrals to companies that hire your age group in Odessa.
The employment programs for students in your town are for those aged 16, 17 to age 24. Since you have a year and a half to participate in Workforce Solutions for the Heart of Texas or Job Corps, you can call Jillian Jones, the WIOA Program Director for Communities in Schools of the Heart of Texas, at 254-753-6002 Ext. 2022. and ask about any employment placement for 14 years and older that is local to Odessa.
One thing that you can do before working is visit your school office for a Certificate of Age document to prove your age to employers. You do not need a Work Permit in the state of Texas but they'll ask for the certificate of age.
If you have not worked before, you can start out by doing various small jobs for people, but these duties will need to be things that you know how to do. Maybe something like washing cars or lawn and yard work. You will have to determine what skills you can get paid for. You can talk about it with friends, family and neighbors by word of mouth and when someone needs help with something they can call you. You will also have to determine what your chances of getting these freelance jobs are based on the makeup of your neighborhood and presenting yourself to the people. I wouldn't post flyers at age 14 for this, but definitely visit your local Library because they may be able to help you with programs that are not listed online.
Someone who doesn't know you really can't suggest the way for you to get work at 14. I advise that you explore this offline, with people that you know as well as new people that you present yourself to. Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to employment, but eventually you will be able to participate in programs that will get you a job. Stay patient and do all you can for your family in the meantime. Helping in other ways can be as important as making money to give them. Hang in there -you are already important to your family. A job will come to you eventually so stick with it and keep your determination strong !
I wish you all the best !

It’s really kind of you to want to help your mom, and trust me, I understand exactly how you feel. I’ve been in the same position, wanting to help my family, and even though I was young, I still managed to find some jobs. If I can do it, so can you! You can start by applying for online jobs through apps or websites. If you’re good at any subject, you can tutor younger students. If tutoring doesn’t interest you, you could also consider working at fast food places like McDonald’s, KFC, or other local restaurants. Don’t stress too much; everything will work out! Just do your best when applying for jobs, whether they’re online or not. I believe in you—you’ve got this!
