Hello, Nelson !
What a super cool career interest you have ! As a Junior in High School, there are some things that you can do now to prepare you for this career.
First, you can participate in the San Francisco Police Department's Ride-A-Long Program during which you will ride with police officers on their calls. It's an advanced form of Shadowing, one might say. You'll have to explain to them that you are a high school student but very serious about preparing for this career and mention any leadership work you have already done because SFPD doesn't generally open this program unless you are already in a degree program for it or training at the Police Academy. I say try anyway because you just never know and it does seem as though they may make an exception. Ask the SFPD about their Police Explorer Cadets program for people in your age group. Also ask them about the Police Activities League because it provides a Law Enforcement Cadet program that you can do now.
On the other hand, the City of San Mateo does open up a ride along program to people in the community. It is called the Patrol Ride Along Program. I left the link for it below. The San Jose Police Department opens their Ride Along Program to the public also. I left the link for you below for more information and link to their sign up form.
Next year as a Senior in High School, I would advise taking a psychology or government class if your school offers them. Also speak with someone at your school to find out about any type of patrol related opportunities that you can do around the school, something like a crossing guard or something similar.
It also may be helpful to read a lot of material and watch a lot of You Tube videos about being a Police Officer. This can give you a variety of information that can help you shape an effective outlook for this career. I left a couple of links to videos below on the subject.
Stay physically and mentally fit. Think about your workout routine and do something daily if you are not already doing so. Your body and mind are very important to maintain for and throughout this career.
See if you can do some volunteer work at your local police department. Just being there and getting to know the officers will be a benefit to you.
I hope that this helps and I wish you all the best !
