Hi Alexander,
Colleges often offer a variety of exciting programs and resources to support first-year students in their transition to college life! Orientation sessions, mentorship programs, and workshops are designed to help new students acclimate both academically and socially. Also, academic advising and counseling services are typically available to guide students through their first year, ensuring they have access to necessary support. As for school spirit and community involvement, many campuses boast vibrant campus life with numerous events, clubs, and organizations that foster a strong sense of community. From my own college experience, joining different clubs and associations was incredibly helpful. It allowed me to meet new people and establish friendships, as many students are in the same situation of looking to connect and find their place in the college community. Hope this helps!

Hi Alexander, this is a great question and Yoga has provided terrific information in response. A few more general thoughts:
- Most colleges/universities are active in their local community and address campus life and community involvement on their website (see link below for the UC campus closest to you). The terms may vary so try different search terms
- The best way to determine the spirit of a place is to go visit, ideally while you are applying. This does three things -- 1) demonstrates your interest and 2) gives you information to answer the "why here" questions and 3) gives you a vibe check, i.e., do you feel excited? could you imagine yourself going there?
- Talk to people you know who are there or went there. If you don't know someone directly, your school's guidance counselor might know someone or someone in your social media circles might
Good luck!

Are you asking about UC schools in general, or a specific campus? Each UC campus has different programs, but overall, they offer strong support for first-year students and have varying levels of school spirit and community involvement. Here’s a general breakdown:
1. Support for First-Year Students
✅ Freshman Orientation Programs – Every UC has an orientation to introduce students to campus life, academics, and resources.
✅ First-Year Experience (FYE) Programs – Some UCs offer FYE courses or seminars that help students transition to college life.
✅ Academic Advising & Tutoring – Every UC has dedicated academic advisors and free tutoring programs.
✅ First-Gen & Transfer Support – UCs like UCLA and UC Berkeley have strong programs for first-generation college students.
✅ Mental Health & Wellness Services – Each UC has counseling services, peer support groups, and wellness programs.
✅ Residential Learning Communities – Some UCs place freshmen in themed housing based on their interests or major.
2. School Spirit & Community Involvement
🏆 UC Berkeley & UCLA – Strong school spirit, major sports culture, and passionate student activism.
🎭 UC Santa Barbara & UC Irvine – Vibrant student life, Greek life, and lots of campus events.
🌎 UC San Diego & UC Davis – More academic-focused but still have active clubs, research opportunities, and outdoor activities.
💡 UC Santa Cruz & UC Merced – Smaller campuses with close-knit communities and nature-focused lifestyles.
📚 UC Riverside – Strong community engagement, especially in social justice and research.
