What do I do after?

I'm almost done in college and need guidance on what to do with my CSCI degree. AI has crashed the job market and I don't know how to deal with that.

Roland Mari’s Answer

Computer science is still a great field to be in. While some people are considering leaving it because of AI, you can choose to stay and succeed. Many companies, especially small and medium ones, still need computer science experts. Keep learning and gaining experience. Remember, AI can be your ally. Those who lost jobs often didn't embrace AI, so use it to your advantage.

Hi Brody,

It sounds like you're in an exciting, yet challenging position as you're about to complete your degree in CSCI! It's understandable to feel uncertain, especially with the rapid changes in the job market due to advancements in AI. Firstly, it's important to remember that the IT sector continues to be in high demand, even if the market sometimes doesn't seem to reflect that. With your background in IT, you already have a strong foundation and relevant experience, which is a huge advantage. Try to consider specializing in niche areas like cybersecurity, cloud computing, data science, machine learning, or AI to enhance your competitiveness. Please stay updated with the latest trends through online courses, certifications, and workshops. I recommend to leverage your network by connecting with industry professionals and alumni, as networking can reveal unadvertised opportunities. Finally, research companies and industries actively hiring, such as tech firms, healthcare, finance, and e-commerce, where IT skills are crucial. Best of luck!

Hello, Brody !

I have to agree with both Advisor Roland and Advisor Fred. You have an exciting career to look forward to !

Some of the job opportunities that wait for you in your town of Murfreesboro, Tennessee are to work as: a Policy Analyst, Programmer Analyst, Senior Controls Engineer, Desktop Support Technician, and Project Manager Specialist. Remember that they also employ Software Test Engineers and IT Support in your town, too. The main companies that you can try to apply to first in your town are Middle Tennessee State University, CHS Corporate, and National Recovery Technologies. You need to sharpen your interviewing skills as well as create a resume that shows strong experience. Guessing at the job market is not an effective way to approach seeking employment.

Something that you and all students need to do now since you're in your Senior year is start making strong connections with your classmates, professors, on campus Career Center and the Computer Lab staff at your college. You can easily do this now before the semester ends.

You can consider going for a teaching credential to teach computers in to elementary school, junior high school and high school students as well as classes based in the community or at a Library. There is such variety for this field. Many computer science majors begin their research and employment search a year prior to graduating but you can start now. Use Indeed, Linked In and Simply Hired to apply for work. I would also recommend reading some local company's websites, clicking on their "Employment Opportunities" or ":Careers" links to apply for any positions you are qualified for related to computer work.

Almost having a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science has prepared you to know the work, the industry and now it's time to apply your talent, reach out to people and think positive about your future !

Fred’s Answer

AI is a tool, not a solution. It need humans to use it.

Anyone who has worked in I.T. knows it is almost impossible to write specs a human can follow. I don't think it's possible to write specs AI can follow very well.

And I reject your statement that the job market has crashed. Sure, things may have shifted, but there are still plenty of jobs. I work at a pretty big I.T. company. Right now, we have about 350 positions posted in Software Engineering, IT, and Cyber and Corporate Security.

Hagen’s Answer

Computer science and especially artificial intelligence is a very fast moving and evolving job arena. I agree the job landscape has definitely gotten more rocky and complex, however that doesn't mean it can't be navigated. As Roland commented AI can be your friend. In my experience there is an opportunity for AI expertise even as just a user. It turns out anytime you want to get anything accomplished with AI there are a variety of concepts and skills required that are not necessarily intuitive. Even with the new Vibe coding trend if you listen to the folks that are experienced with it, there's a lot that goes into preparing a workable or actionable proposal to programs like Cursor AI. There's rules, there is MCP, there's graphical sketches of what it is that you're hoping to create, there's Perplexity, etc.. That might change over time, but I think as it does there's still going to be a requirement for experience and skills when working with AI.
My advice is you worry less about AI and its impact on the job market and focus on becoming as skilled at working with AI as possible. The good news is working with AI can be fun and interesting and definitely accelerates your productivity and your knowledge.
So grab the mane and hang on it's going to be a wild ride.

Hagen recommends the following next steps:

There are literally dozens if not hundreds of videos on developing AI skills, watch them.
It takes time to determine what AI can actually do versus what you might imagine it can do and that's an important distinction. You need to understand that distinction
Try everything AI you can prepare to be disappointed and frustrated.
