Hi Thando,

Start by researching the industry to understand different types of modeling like runway, editorial, and commercial. Build a portfolio with simple, natural photos, including headshots. Look for reputable modeling agencies that work with teens, submit your portfolio, and attend open calls. Stay healthy, practice good posture, and be confident in front of the camera. Consider modeling schools or workshops to learn runway walking and posing. Do not forget to keep up with your education and explore other interests too. Remember, modeling is competitive, and many successful models start at different ages, so there's no rush. Best of luck!

Hello, Thando !

In order to explore being a model, your parents will need to accompany, oversee and manage your training and future career until you are 18. The typical age to start modeling in South Africa is 16. Your parents will need to pay for your training at modeling school, a photographer for portfolio photos, be your source of transportation and keep a rapport with your teachers at school because if you get work after training, you may have to miss school.

I highly emphasize that you will need to definitely go for training at a Modeling School. The Modeling Schools in South Africa are The Model Academy in Johannesburg, ICE Models JHB also in Johannesburg and Rage Models. Your parent will need to contact them in person with you or by phone to obtain the information about applying for their training. Your parent will need to learn how to represent you as well as be able to sign necessary contracts when you obtain work. Do a search online for the modeling school websites for their contact information.

Do not start sending your photos and resumes out until you have finished your training to be a model. You will have to also be versatile and be open to doing a lot more than just fashion modeling. You will learn in Modeling School of the variety of types of modeling and media that you will be expected to know how to work with.

Never place your identification or modeling photos on any social media platforms. Your modeling instructor will let you know what professional modeling websites are okay to register at.

So if you are willing to spend time training, your parents are able to invest in your career, your school doesn't mind if you miss school, and you have a strong drive for this career, you'll do fine. Hone your communication and social skills also and you will be on the right track for this career.

Remember that it's not all glamorous even though the end products looks it. You will need to tolerate travel, uncomfortable positions and weather, and you'll have to work even on days that you don't feel your best. If you do not have the support for this right now, you can start everything on your own when you are 18.

I hope this is helpful information for you and I wish you the best !
