What steps should I take as a high school student to set me on the path to becoming a lawyer or a diplomat, and what classes should I take?
I’m currently in model Un and love and excel in it, I have won awards for such, I’m a freshman but I’ve been taking all advanced classes and excel in debate and discussion in English, and I’m still undecided on whether I become a diplomat or a lawyer.

Great job on your progress so far! Keep up the amazing work! It would be a great idea to take any debate or speech classes available to you. Try to join public speaking or debate competitions nearby and aim for awards. These experiences will help you stand out. Remember, you can be both a diplomat and a lawyer—many people successfully do both! I participated in Model UN during high school and now work as an attorney. While I'm not a diplomat, I've gained valuable experience working in government, lobbying, and advocating for various agencies. Consider getting involved by volunteering for a political campaign or at an embassy if you can. Keep pushing forward!

Congrats on your great work so far! When you get a chance, over the summer perhaps, volunteer to work in a law firm or for a governmental agency, to get a feeling and understanding of the processes. All the best!

Hi Elissa,
Your involvement in Model UN and debate is an excellent foundation for developing your speaking and critical thinking skills. Continue excelling in your English and history classes, and consider learning a foreign language to enhance your global perspective. When you reach college, consider studying political science or international relations, and seek internships at law firms or NGOs to gain practical experience. Remember, networking is crucial—engage with lawyers and diplomats to gain valuable insights. Always keep an open mind and find a mentor to guide you. You are definitely on a promising journey, so maintain your enthusiasm and see where it leads!
