How do I stand out in the CIS job market without internship experience?

I’m currently in my last semester as a Computer Information Systems (CIS) student with a focus on Data Analytics, and I’m worrying about my career after graduation. I’ve completed coursework on statistical analysis, data visualization, and database management, and I have experience with tools like SQL and Python.
However, as an international student, I didn’t have any luck finding internships during my college career.
How can I leverage my academic experience to stand out in the competitive job market, especially with no extensive internship or professional experience? Are there any certifications or additional skills I should be pursuing to enhance my job prospects?

Hi Sylvia,

If you aim to stand out in the CIS field without internships, focus on showcasing your class projects, such as those involving SQL and Python, and consider creating a portfolio. Obtain certifications like Google's Data Analytics or Azure Data Scientist to enhance your credentials. Engage in open-source projects on GitHub or undertake freelance work on Upwork for practical experience. Additionally, blog about your journey and join LinkedIn groups to network effectively. Tailor your resume to highlight your technical skills, and consider finding a mentor for guidance. Best of luck!
