Hi Nekiya,

Getting a job with great pay for most people involves a lot of education or professional training. It usually also requires long working hours once you have the job.

First, you need to take inventory:

What are you good at and what do you enjoy doing? If you just don't have the talent or interest for the job it will be very hard to get the qualification and very miserable to keep a job.

What interests you? If you don't like what you do the best salary will probably not be compensation enough.

What is your personality like? Are you outgoing and good with people or more of an introvert? Many things can of course be learned but if you don't connect well with people, a position as a sales person is probably not the best for you.

What are you willing to sacrifice in terms of time and money to get to where you want to be? Getting an education can cost a lot of money and a lot of time. Are you willing and able to make that kind of commitment?

What kind of lifestyle suits you (other than being rich)? If you want to have a lot of time for family/hobbies/other responsibilities, you might not be willing to spend the required long hours or irregular hours at work. An emergency surgeon e.g. is pretty much always on call. If you want to live in the countryside but there is low demand for your skills (e.g. as a cosmetic surgeon) you'll have a problem.

When you have figured out what you are good at (are you logical/technical, sciency, artistic etc), look for jobs that require that kind of talent. There are aptitude tests that can help you figure that out. Your guidance counselor can also help you with that.

Check the educational requirements for jobs that appeal to you, check average salaries and career outlook.

You can use Indeed.com to check for jobs that are currently available in your area. You can also use LinkedIn to find people who work in a career that appeals to you and check how they got there. What's their background and what steps did they take?

Check out Community College and University websites. What kind of programs are they offering and what kind of careers do they lead to?

I hope this helps a bit for now! All the best to you!

Hi Nekiya,

Before we can fully answer your question, let's go over a few things. What do you mean by "great paying"? When you say you want a "professional" job, are you thinking of an office job, a mix of office and hands-on work, or something more hands-on? Do you have any areas of interest or skills? How much time and effort are you willing to put into training for your desired job?

If by professional you mean office jobs, there are many that don't require more than a high school diploma. Customer Service roles are common, though they might not pay as much as jobs needing a degree or special skills.

Don't overlook trades like electricians, plumbers, or mechanics. They are professional too and often need less formal schooling. Plus, you can learn on the job through apprenticeships. Skilled tradespeople can earn more than many office workers. Jobs that mix office and hands-on work, like Mechanical Engineering, also pay well. You might spend some days writing programs and others working directly with machines.

If you share more about your interests, we can give more specific advice. There's no magic job that pays a lot with zero effort, but there are jobs that feel less like work because you enjoy them and they cover your bills.

Hi Nekiya,

To get a great job involves combining intelligence with strategy. I suggest to start by identifying your passions and the career that fits you. Then pursue the necessary qualifications, whether it is a degree or online courses. Gain experience through internships or entry-level positions, and network effectively at events or on LinkedIn. Keep your resume polished and customized, and prepare thoroughly for interviews. Build your personal brand online to highlight your skills and enthusiasm. Stay curious, keep learning, and consider finding a mentor to guide you through your career journey. Hope this helps!
