Hi Sanvhi,

Your desire to learn about the difficulties of homelessness and domestic abuse is admirable, especially since you intend to launch a nonprofit. Several organisations in Florida deal with these important issues:

- Lotus House Women's Shelter: Located in Miami, Lotus House is the largest women's shelter in the U.S., providing sanctuary and supportive services to over 1,550 women, teens, and children annually. They focus on encouraging folks to depart the shelter system and lead lives of greater opportunity.

- Hubbard House: This Jacksonville-based organisation provides all-inclusive services for victims of domestic abuse, such as safety planning and refuge. To help those in need, their skilled advocates are on call around-the-clock.

- SafeSpace: This state-certified domestic violence centre offers emergency shelter, advocacy, and prevention programmes to the Treasure Coast, which includes Indian River, Martin, and St. Lucie counties.

- Family Life Center: Operating in Flagler County, this nonprofit delivers crucial support services focused on ending domestic and sexual violence.

- Mary & Martha House: Women and children fleeing homelessness and domestic abuse can find emergency and transitional accommodation at Mary & Martha House, which is situated in Hillsborough County.

Looking into online forums and support groups can help you connect with people who have more experience in these areas and obtain deeper insights:

- The DomesticShelters.org website Online Forums and Chats: This site provides a list of the top chat rooms, social media communities, telehealth providers, and message boards devoted to sexual assault and domestic abuse. Involving oneself with these communities can yield insightful insights.

- The r/homeless community on Reddit is a helpful forum where people exchange stories and tips on homelessness. By taking part in these conversations, you can gain firsthand knowledge and understanding of the difficulties experienced by homeless people.

Additionally, the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) also provides services for homeless and domestic violence victims, and examining their resources can give a more comprehensive picture of statewide program and support networks. Interacting with these groups and communities will not only improve your knowledge but also assist you in creating the network of people and resources necessary to launch a nonprofit that successfully combats domestic abuse and homelessness.

I hope this helps!

Best wishes!

Michelle’s Answer

Hello again, Sanvhi !

Your previous inquiries relayed a variety of information but now I understand that you want to learn about non-profits to serve a specific population. You can always come here to ask questions.

You will need to know the path to take to start a non-profit social service. As I've mentioned to you before, it is not legal for someone your age of 14 to start this venture just yet due to the legal and financial aspects that are involved. There is, however, a path you can take and it won't be quick or overnight. It will take a long time. I can tell you that I was a case manager for many non-profits for 27 years and you will do better to concentrate on services for domestic violence client services and their families rather than the homeless. Just my estimation based on observation experience, but it's up to you.

The way you will learn how to set this up is that you'll need at least 6 years of college for the Masters Degree I described in my previous advice. It's okay that this all doesn't happen tomorrow because you can and will need to work in and volunteer at social services agencies to really learn the ropes. This is what I advised previously, too.

Here are the social service agencies that serve clients of domestic violence that you can volunteer at: Harbor House of Central Florida, SafeHouse / Seminole County Victims Rights Coalition Inc, Help Now of Osceola, Haven of Lake and Sumter Counties, Heavenly Touch Ministries, Shakthi Us, Builders for the Kingdom, and Narcissistic Abuse Survivors. Keep in mind that they are not teachers so you'd have to get your familiarity by volunteering and helping them out that way. Find their contact information online and visit them in person. Because of the nature of the services, you may have to visit them in person to offer volunteering.

For homeless services in your city here are some: Christian Service Center for the Homeless, Family Promise of Greater Orlando, and also read your county's website about homeless services. I left the link to their website for you below.

You will not learn how to become an Executive Director of a non-profit by "learning the difficulties" of these ventures. A huge part of this career is knowing how to run an organization and as I previously mentioned, it will take a lot of education to learn that in college as well as learn the direct service human service end of it. You will not be able to start until you are able to afford renting and furnishing a space, paying utility bills, hiring staff and have your own transportation as well as some vehicles for staff to use for clients. As well, you will need the credentials that will validate your contribution to the community. This is why you will learn this career through college and it cannot be done now. Volunteering right now is a good thing. You will pick up a lot of tips and knowledge about your future ventures. As I've mentioned to you in my previous advice, you will need a Masters Degree for this career in either Public Administration, Social Work or Nonprofit Administration. You can read about colleges that offer these degrees by doing a search online. Chances are that you may not be able to receive funding until you have met these requirements.

Definitely keep asking questions and return here for advice ! Have an awesome day !

Michelle provided an excellent response. To add to what she shared, I would do a google search to see what DV or homeless shelter is near you in FL. The difficulties of starting a shelter for DV victims and a non-for-Profit in general I would say is making sure policy is being enacted not just on paper but in action. In the medical field the oath is to do no harm and that applies especially for those who have been deeply harmed by an intimate partner. Their trauma and their triggers are very open. The other thing you want to look into is real-estate (need property to house/shelter those being served), financial planning for how you will fund your fundraising and revenue efforts...and lastly i would say keeping your non-profit in compliance to receive donations, as it is a year long process with a great deal of paperwork. All makes sense. In the world we are living in presently....there is not much to spare for many, so what they do have they want to make sure, the cause they are giving to is truly doing great work. I hope i helped add to Michelle's response and that your question was answered. Wishing you all the best. Such a rewarding field to want to enter into.
