Is it possible for someone who is in software engineering to switch to cybersecurity And is this switch something you would recommend??
I am a computer science major who was interested in Software Engineering at first. I have learned more about cyber security recently and was thinking of switching over. I was hoping people could reply so I could see if this is a patch that's common or if it is more out of the ordinary.

Wherever your interests are it's possibly to get there. You need to make one decision after the other. If you are passionate about cybersecurity go for it. Start off with certifications and invest your time understanding the concepts. Even in Cybersecurity you will have to branch to several practitioner like penetration tester, cloud security among many others. You still have the option of keeping up with the software engineering then later you can be a security tester for software. Cheers the future is bright.

Hi Khalid
I guess the question would rather be, why wouldn't it be OK to change? People change jobs in IT all the time and no-one really bats an eyelid at that. The thing to remember is that IT changes very rapidly so there is always something new technology-wise and so there is always something new job-wise too. Let's just look at AI and a job like a "prompt engineer". While we can debate whether that is a real job or just part of what someone would do, a couple of years ago no-one was talking about this as a possible role. So, new roles come along all the time and older roles often disappear (or become something that only niche companies might need to do). I certainly see no issues in you changing like this. And I expect that you will change jobs many more times over your career too.

Keep your degree in Software Engineering. Switching to Cyber Security later is easy with a few certifications. The cyber industry is crowded, so having a Software Engineering degree will be beneficial.
