What prepared you the most for teaching children?

I am currently a 9th grader in California and want to pursue higher education in the education field. I hope to be a elementary teacher for 3rd and below for special education or other. I have volunteered at event for kids and kids in general but was wondering what would give me the most insight. What allowed you to understand what teaching would entail the most and what did you do to prepare.

There were a lot of things that prepared me for teaching. First, you need to look at your own traits. Patience, emotional intelligence and a true love of learning are critical to teach, especially young children and/or kids with special needs. One thing I would suggest is to volunteer at a summer camp or afterschool program. This will give you real life experience. When I first started teaching, I also worked in both an after school program and worked summer camp. This gave me the opportunity to really get to know the kids, they way they think and process information in a more casual setting. You can also volunteer to do tutoring. But you are asking all the right questions. Good luck!

What prepared me most for teaching children wasn’t just one thing—it was a mix of experiences. Spending time with kids, whether through babysitting, volunteering, or helping younger siblings, taught me how they think and learn. I also learned a lot from teachers who inspired me, showing me how patience, creativity, and kindness make a huge difference. Most importantly, I realized that education is so important because it shapes a child's future, and every child deserves the chance to succeed. Understanding their unique needs and strengths is key to helping them grow. If you love working with kids and want to help them reach their full potential, you’re already on the right path!
