What is it like living with roommates on campus, especially if those roommates have preferences that are very different than my own? #Spring25
I am going away to college this fall, and I am nervous about the experience of living with others as I am an only child.

In China, there's a saying: "It's better to share happiness with others than to enjoy it alone." This means you'll have more fun living with your roommates. Remember, everyone is different, so don't expect them to be close to you right away. Be kind to others, and they'll be kind to you in return.

If this is your first time being away from home, get ready for an amazing new adventure! You can learn so much from this chance. Everyone is unique, so it's okay if people seem very different from what you're used to. Share your stories and listen to theirs. Be kind, respectful, and eager to learn.
Introduce yourself and a give them a background of your family.
You don't have to tell them everything about yourself in the first go. As you travel, your vibe will attract your tribe.
Be yourself. You don't have to please everyone around you.

Hi Patrick,
Yes, living with a roommate can be challenging, especially if you are not used to it and you don't get to choose.
I would recommend that you try to move in before classes start and get to know each other while you explore campus. Do some fun stuff together. Meet the other folks in res. There will be some parties, some orientations. Explore town too. You can help each other with all the new stuff even if you are very different.
Also agree on some clear boundaries: study/quiet times and level of organization and cleanliness are probably the big ones. Find out about each other's schedules. Also find places on campus where you can study, like the library or a computer lab. You'll also have to find some rules about having visitors.
I hope this helps for now! All the best to you! You got this!
