Hello, Bulela !
If you are under 18, your parents will have to oversee, manage and pay for things but if you are over 18, you can do the steps towards a modeling career on your own.
Your first step is to become trained as a Model and that means going to Modeling School. This is not a career to jump right into as you will have to know how to model and take direction while on a set or runway. Modeling Schools in your country that your parents can call are Ace Models, The Model Academy, SA Beauty Modelling Academy, and Boss Models Johannesburg (in Cape Town).
As a professional model, you will not work for one outfiitter, brand, medium or company. You will be expected to be available for any project that your agent calls you to for a "go see". You will be expected to model for television, video, stage, runway, photos, and other live action projects. One must go into modeling knowing this and knowing how the entire business is run. You will learn everything you'll need to know through Modeling School. This career can also potentially involve travel.
It helps to have a wide range of life experience and actively know how to network within your local modeling community. A lot of times, this can mean increased opportunities for securing representation from a Modeling Agent (they choose you, you don't choose them) and having photographers and other professionals begin to know you. This is another reason why Modeling School is so important as it provides this potential opportunity.
To learn more about modeling before going to modeling school, you can read some books about the career. Some books you may want to read to become more informed about Modeling are "Complete Guide for Models" by Eric Bean and Jenni Bidner, "The Model Book" by Stephan Czaja and "Guide to Producing a Fashion Show" by Judith C. Everett, Kristen K. Swanson. This last book talks about the production aspects of fashion shows, which can be beneficial for models understanding the broader context of the fashion industry.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
