What can I do in addition to earning a History degree to increase my chances of becoming an archivist?
I am currently enrolled in a BA of History program for the fall and volunteer at IARA. What else can I do to make myself a more desirable candidate for employment?

First, make sure you are taking the history courses that meld into the type of archiving you wish to do.
Second, read all the history books you can get ahold of. That is in books, not online. I have no idea where you live, but my library gets me books easily from other libraries. And I read a lot of history. And many are quite specific. This may help you to center your own mind.
Explore exactly the qualifications you need for whatever institutions you may be interested in working for.
Also explore the possibility of volunteering to work at an institution within their archiving department. But again, I'm not sure you are able to do that as I'm not sure where you are located.

You're off to a great start! In addition to your History BA and volunteering at IARA, you can:
-Take library/archive-related electives if available.
-Learn basic preservation or digitization skills.
-Get experience with metadata or cataloging tools (like Excel, Omeka, or ArchivesSpace).
-Network with archivists and join groups like SAA (Society of American Archivists).
-Consider a Master’s in Library/Information Science down the road—many archivist jobs require it.
Keep volunteering and gaining hands-on experience—that’s gold!
