What are the current educational standards in Ohio for historical education? #Spring25

Hello! Grade 12 Highschooler here, currently majoring in social studies 9-12 education (with a focus on history).

I have a good idea on my current required courses, but I am interested to know something about the job. What are the current standards in Ohio for historical education? Is there a regimented standard for the entire state, or it per school to decide? I am thinking of classes like World History, American History, or Government. If there are standards on the state level, how does a teacher usually find out when they change? How can I view those standards?

Thank you all for your time. #Spring25

Catherine’s Answer

Hey Zachariah,

Ohio has statewide social studies standards that all public schools must follow. These standards outline what students should learn in subjects like World History, American History, and Government at different grade levels. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce sets these standards and provides a Model Curriculum to help teachers implement them.

How Do Teachers Learn About Changes to the Standards?

1. Ohio Department of Education Website: Updates to the standards are published here: Ohio Social Studies Standards.

2. Newsletters & Alerts: Teachers can sign up for email updates from the department to stay informed.

3. Professional Development & Workshops: School districts and educational service centers often provide training when standards change.

4. State & Local Conferences: Events organized by groups like the Ohio Council for the Social Studies (OCSS) discuss curriculum updates.

If you are planning to become a history teacher in Ohio, reviewing these standards and subscribing to updates will help you stay informed!

Well, first of all, I note that Catherine has done much of the work for you.

And you wish to primarily teach history.

In Ohio.

I take that to mean in a high school or middle school.

There is still a market for teaching history at that level. At the university and college level social sciences are on a downward trend, giving way to tech and finance majors.

And if you wish to teach history at the level I mentioned above, U.S. history is a natural, whether you personally like it or not. Then, perhaps, the European exploration of the world. One of my personal favorites is the history of the indigenous natives of Mexico, Central and South America and the grand civilizations they developed. But I am not sure courses involving Indian civilizations are viable at the level you are intending to teach.

But if history is your area, I'd spend a good deal of time reading. As in books. That you can hold in your hands.
