Where is the best place to look for internships in college?

I plan on majoring in architecture and within architecture, you must intern at a firm for at least two years in order to earn your license and began working for a firm or start your own. #architecture

Hi Jaquan. Great question; internships are very important while in college. There are a variety of ways that you can go about looking for an internship. Your college/university is a good place to start. Generally, the school host career fairs and many companies will be there with various internships. I highly recommend attending the career fairs, as it allows you to get face to face time with the recruiter. Furthermore, stay up-to-date on which companies come to your school to provide informational interviews, this is another great way to get face to face time. In addition, if you are a part of any clubs on campus, they may have connections to companies, networking is key to finding internships.

If you currently do not have a LinkedIn profile, I highly encourage you to make one. LinkedIn is a great platform and allows you to search and apply for internships based on fields, locations, experience level, etc. Many recruiters use LinkedIn to find candidates and for an initial review of experience.

Best wishes,

Amit

Hi Jaquan,

Although I cannot speak specifically as to how to obtain an internship with an architecture firm, I can advise on how to go about it. There are several people within your program who can help you down the right path. These include:

-Your professors

-Your academic adviser

-Fellow students who are also searching for internships

-Career Fairs

-Reaching out directly to architecture/design firms in your area to determine if they use interns

The greatest wealth of information will likely come from your professors and peers, those who know what position you are in. So, be inquisitive and be a hunter and you will discover an opportunity.

Thanks!

Mike

Hi There!

My B.Arch program didn't require internships but I imagine your school advisors can give you some leads on where to find internship opportunities.

You could join the AIA as a student member, attend a couple meetings and network yourself as eager for an internship.

You can post on the AIA job boards that you are looking.

The more field experience you get, the better your design decisions you can make. I run into Architects and Engineers all the time who don't know how an element is built which causes issues during construction.

Always ask questions!

If you are ever working on a project or out in the field, observe, take note & ask as many questions as you can.

Kelly M. recommends the following next steps:

Join the AIA as a student member.
Reach out to local architects and ask if you can come see their office.
Always ask questions.
