What is the best way to make connections in college for a career in the film industry, namely with regard to acting, writing, cinematography, and/or directing? I am a graduating high school senior with zero connections with any other filmmakers or artists. I am looking to break out of my shell and create a huge network of people - primarily in the film industry - when I go into college (Biola University). Any specific tips or tricks (other than the obvious: make friends and get help from professors)?

Hi, Kaitlyn. I would say, pay attention to film organizations, film events online and in person.

You can join some film organizations if they are free, and look out for any opportunities that want Volunteers. Then you can volunteer! This would be a great chance for you to get in touch with filmmakers.

The same applies to film events, like any screenings, festivals, clubs.

If you have extra time, you can pay attention to some film production companies in your area, and see if they offer internships, or volunteer opportunities and apply.

That said, those can be done when you have extra free time. Kindly note, networking can be time consuming. Right now, I believe study is your primary focus.

Good luck!

I would say the best way to get networking in the film industry is to volunteer for film festivals or any type of festival related to the entertainment industry. You can join "Group Effort Initiative." It's a program that helps you network and learn within the entertainment industry. Joining "Central Casting," is a good way as well. By doing some background acting, you'll get experience in the entertainment world and understand what it takes to be on set. There have even been times when background actors end up becoming Production Assistants on set because they became friendly with the PAs. The "Writers Guild Foundation" holds a writing staff training program. It trains you how to become a writers assistant or any other part of the staff. There is Linkedin as well. You can connect with anyone on LinkedIn. You'd be surprised to see how many people are willing to help others. And lastly, I'd say getting a mentor is very helpful.

I know you have what it takes!! Congrats in getting accepted into Biola University. Everything that's meant for you is coming your way. Just keep believing in yourself and don't give up.
