What internships should I be applying for this summer?

Hello everyone! I'm currently a college freshman hoping to go into medical school after I graduate. I'm hoping to get an internship in a clinical setting this summer to get some beginner experience in the field and make sure that this is the right career for me. What advice would you give to someone looking for one of these types of internships, and what job types/positions should I be looking and applying for? I have heard before that a Patient Care Technician is a good starting place, but is this true and are there any other options besides this?

There are several good places to look for internships that tend to matter to medical school admissions folks. Getting an EMT certificate can help, and is often required for those working as patient care technicians (there are a lot of names for similar roles in hospitals). That can also help get you work that can help pay your bills while teaching you important life support skills. Ms. Pulgini's suggestion of becoming a medical assistant is also a way to work in the field and learn about what it is like to be a physician or other part of the healthcare team. Research internships may be available at local universities, and that is a valuable experience. One last idea is to explore helping internationally. Most organizations that help people around the world require nursing or medical degrees, but there may be options you can take advantage of at your stage of learning.

I strongly recommend becoming a medical assistant. It is a great balance of patient care hours and healthcare experience hours.
