What skills or tips are good to know prior to pursuing degrees in Graphic Design and Illustration? #Spring25
My goal is to work in the film and video game industry so it would be good to know from those who are educated what employers look for.

Definitely have a strong portfolio- showing your use of color, anatomy, perspective, 2D and 3D modeling, and having strong silhouette design in your characters so that they are readable! 3 pt turn arounds are great to add as well. As for graphic design, having strong typography, color, and having some samples including: book/magazine cover, brochures, logos, flyers, social media graphics, magazine spread layout, and album cover. Hope this helps!

Hello Rayana,
The Graphic Design field is very skill orientated. Some positions require many skills and others very little, but you should try to learn the basic fundamentals, from drawing a line and gradually working your way up. You will not be perfect but you will learn from your mistakes. Most employers will ask you if you are skilled in Adobe, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. Plus another software that is being well known called Figma, so you should try to practice it. Hope this helps, and all the best.
Thanks,
Gishan

Yes, if you want to study Graphic Design and Illustration, it helps to know how to draw on paper. It's also good to understand which colors look nice together. Plus, being able to use a computer and learn new software like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator will make things easier for you.
