should I do a major and minor?

Specifically, next year I'm applying to NTID, Gallaudet, and Hunter College.
I'm thinking about doing a major and minor. So is it possible for me to do both?

Jonathan’s Answer

I think doing a major and a minor is a great idea. Plenty of people do it, so it is definitely possible. Personally, I majored in accounting and finance (though many courses overlapped between the two programs, so it was probably roughly equivalent to doing a major and minor in terms of workload). I think there are a lot of minors that could help you stand out among others in your major when it comes to applying for jobs. For example, if you are a business major, having a minor in a certain language could give you a skill that not many other business majors have. Having a minor is also a good opportunity to broaden your knowledge base into other areas. Maybe you plan on going to college so that you can get a good job, but it's also important to learn just for the sake of learning. As I said before, I studied accounting and finance, but while I did not complete a minor, a made an effort to take classes in History and Philosophy because those were topics I was interested in, and I am glad I did that. Once you have decided on the school you would like to attend, I would suggest reaching out to admissions staff at that school to get their advice on the major and minor programs you are thinking about.

Jonathan recommends the following next steps:

It's still early, you will have plenty of time to decide on a possible major or minor while in college. For now, focus on doing the best you can on the application process.
Then start thinking about what you want to major/minor in. If you have a few ideas, you could reach out to someone at the school you plan on attending to get their thoughts on what you would like to study.

This can greatly vary based on your college's course requirements and your capacity to manage the workload. You'll get a sense of your balance once you're fully immersed in it. I pursued a major in International Studies and a minor in Spanish, and I found it to be a manageable and fulfilling experience for me. So, gear up and embrace the challenge!
