Chris,
There are several ways to make money by creating YouTube videos but the first step is getting out there and making some great content!
Before you can make money you need to get subscribers for your YouTube channel, and if people are going to subscribe you need to give them a reason to come back again and again. So, my recommendation is start shooting! The quickest way to make money on YouTube is to get really into making videos and start cranking them out one after another. You will quickly learn how to film, edit, and perhaps even be the star of your videos. There are some great communities like YTtalk.com to help you out as you get started.
Once you start gaining subscribers you can become a YouTube Partner or join a Multi-Channel Network (MCN), which will pay you a small amount of money per view ($1-$5 per thousand views). You can even get brands to pay you to talk about their products as your channel grows.
My recommendation is to start filming and see if making YouTube videos is something you really enjoy. If you are having fun you will likely end up making great videos and getting people to subscribe to your channel. Then you can start making money... but like many YouTubers you might be so into creating videos that you will spend your earnings on a better camera...
Good Luck and let me know when you get your first 1000 subscribers!
Cheers,
brendan

It does not pay unless you get advertisers. The advertisers pay you to run an add before your video.

Youtube will pay you for advertising. To get to that point, you will need to have a large amount of subscribers. What you and your friends need to do is create something and then see if it there is any interest. Also do not give up, view will be low in the beginning but if people are interested in what you are creating they will make it over to view. Eventually, you may be able to get advertised and then make money there.
