How does one know what they’re meant to be?

I always get the question on “what do you want to work as?” and my response is always “I’m not sure yet.” Im tired of giving that response and want to truly know what I’m best to specialize in. I’m honestly scared to go to college without having any clue on what I want to be for the rest of my life. Everyday is one less day I have to decide and if I take too long, I’ll have to settle for something I really hate. #undecided #advice #scaredofcollage

Anthony’s Answer

I believe a lot of students enter college with a general idea or no idea at all and through experimenting with classes discover what they enjoy and want to develop into a career. Personally I used college as an opportunity to try classes in different areas. I went to a college prep HS so I wasn't exposed to a lot of options. I was forced to take 4 years math, 4 years English, 4 years science, etc... not a lot of electives like public schools. When I got to college I tool classes in Law, Meteorology, Music, Kinesiology, you name it. I didn't settle on my major until I was exposed to a class in Computer Programming in my Junior year and graduated with a degree in Management Information systems. That was 28 years ago and I'm still in the computer field. There is nothing to be scared about in college. Use it as an opportunity to discover all the different fields of study available. Something will click.

Odeth, the only advice I can give you is to not fear the future.. You can go to college and take liberal arts courses until you decide what you want to do.. To help you attend any and all career and job fairs that you can go to and ask questions to the people thay work there.. See what they do, ask, why they do it? Then maybe you will find something that would make you happy.. Be fearless, go out there and try new things, talk to people in different professions, and don't stress.. One day you will just know.. So when they ask you what do you want to do, just say, " I'm undecided as of now, but i know that whatever I choose to be will make my family proud, my friends proud, and most of all, ill be proud of myself". Its a journey but its so worth it!! Good Luck!!

Simeon’s Answer

I would look at some of the fastest growing careers and fields and see if any of them appeal to you. You don't have to choose one of them, but it can give you a great starting point if nothing comes to mind. Also, don't discount the possibility of doing trade jobs like plumbing, welding, electrician, or HVAC as these careers offer a lot of opportunities as well. You don't have to go to college to be successful, so evaluate what you would plan to do with a given degree, especially if you plan to take on debt to get it.

I dont believe you are truly going to get the answer you are looking for here but I want you to know that that is OKAY! I can tell you I went to school for computer engineering and ended up with a degree in Kinesiology (the study of the body's movement) and now I work in the telecommunications field!

Figuring out your purpose is an absurd thing that we ask high school seniors to try and do. Go to school, try your hardest in whatver direction you are leaning towards, and be flexible and willing to adjust to your ever changing and evolving interests and inspirations! It may take 6 months it may to 6 years but assure yourself you are not alone in this feeling of uncertainty and that soooo many other people are in your same shoes! I wish you the best of luck!
