What kind of jobs can a person with a New Media Design major be qualified to do?

I am interested in computers and art. I like art and designing things with the use of computers. I was told that I should major in New Media Design. I have never heard of this major before so I am unsure of what kind of jobs that it would qualify me for. I am also unsure of how I could describe this major to others. My main concerns are whether other professionals would recognize this degree and if I could find a job with this major. #new-media

Hi Gabrielle! New Media Design is indeed hard to define; I can see why you're having trouble here. I'll try to give you examples from my work experience. At the company I work at, "new media design" is broadly considered digital design. This can be something highly technical like coding web pages using HTML or designing mobile apps using Java, or something more creative like user experience (UX) design (very simply, designing the flow of web sites) or digital logo design/branding using programs like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. The last option sounds like what you would be interested in. At my company, we have an entire department called Creative Services, whose only job is to produce logos, graphics and designs for the rest of the company to use in internal and external marketing efforts. We employ several digital designers. In our case, your portfolio of design work matters a great deal when we look for new hires, but a new media design major would also be a solid thing to have on your resume as well. Best of luck!
